So last night me and my friend were on the road on the highway just driving normally...he turns to me saying he needs to go to the bathroom can i drive faster...so i got on the gas to pass a vehicle...upon passing it...my rpm all of sudden revs up as i press the gas pedal...i turn to my friend saying did he just put it in neutral...said he didnt...so i pull over to the side to check it out....no leakage and plenty of ATF also with no abnormal sounds....what could of happen to my tranny?...its like its stuck in neutral
    That is a good queation.

Best guess is that they use electronic shift solenoids. Maybe one of them is bad and when you got on the gas it tried to downshift amd got stuck in the middle or something. Gunna need real "physical" diagnosis.
Check the fluid level in the gearbox to start with.

i have checked the fluid in the tranny...dipstick shows plenty also still being redish and no burnt smell...added sum more ATF this morning just in case but still doesnt catch any gears
Dont want to scare you bro hopefully its not to serious. But i just lost my gen1 tc and had to trade in for a tc2. Your tranny might be going out. And if it is ita going to slip and the rpms will rev. If you notice any gear hesitation lag or slipin or noise it could be going out. I had hesitation and my tranny went from bad driveable to worse unsafe. Good luck id get it looked by a mechanic and hopeully you didnt drive it hard pedal to the medal shifting gears on an auto because i paid that price def not worth it (rip gen1 tc 46k miles.. Currently 2012 gen2 tc)

that really sucks bro! but since i've been around the tC scene since the beginning, I've only see auto tC's die because they were abused. Others I've seen (taken care of) go to 200k and more! The ones that were abused, that was the original owner who abused it then the 2nd owner gets it and ooops.. it's dying. sad but true.

yeah immortaltc has it right, it could be one of the electronic solenoids that shift the gears. I think there's three, one for the 1-2 shift, 3-4shift and reverse. I've also seen auto tc's slip in their shifting when the trans fluid needs to be changed. There is no "lifetime" fluid, no matter what toyota says. Nothing lasts forever. You'll definitely have to take it to someone you trust to check it out, since the ECU (computer that controls the engine/trans) controls the trans it should be able to tell what's going on. There are tests that can be done to find out.
Thanks everyone....like mention above...I am the 2nd owner and the orginal owner might of abused it...so that might b the case...to b honest I never notice anything goin wrong with the tranny but then again im not that experience to know if sumthing was goin wrong....no I wasnt shifting L 2 3 D when it happen hahah....it was just on D....ill admit....once in a while I get on the gas but between me and my friends im the granny driver
Sounds like slipping to me, I'm going to bet you need a new Trans...
but would your trans be covered by warranty if it only had 46k miles? my auto is at 123k and i do a couple pulls with it every month and it runs fine.
Yea dude. If yoy do it in can ruin it trust me i just went thru the loss of my tranny. Do NOT FLUSH or drain the fluid because it will.make it worse. Just wait a bit. If you flush its going to be slipping more and i did a partial drain refill believing that my silanoids were dirty but that FD me up and cut my tranny asap. Get it checked immmeed!!!! I had 46k and abused my gen1. I advise everyone in auto any auto its not worth it. Most likely if you notice late shift gears or lagg or your rpms jumping up your honestly thru
I am confused by a lot of these comments. Are you reading all if the OP? Or just not understanding?

His trans is NOT slipping. It won't function at all.
His fluid is still red/pink....not burnt. Trans service will not cause harm.
It was functioning normal prior to this, there for it's NOT caused by wear.

I am concerned that even though he states it was full, he added more. More does NOT = better.
@immortaltc- i agree with you, oh wait I already did agree.. sounds like a solenoid went bad, usually when a trans goes, it goes slowly and gives warning. This just stopped, and I think a scan of the trans ecu (transmission computer) is in order here to see what did fail. But shouldn't the check engine light, light up if this was the case?

So i shouldn't get the auto trans fluid flushed? i was actually planing on getting mine flushed and get my car checked out bc i think i have a couple bad motor mounts as well. my trans fluid is starting to turn gray and im past the 120k miles, and i thought you are suppose to change the fluid every 60k miles??
With trans fluid there are 2 options. Change it regularly or never. You can not change it for the first time at 120. I did mine at 55k and I just hit 110k last week. I will be doing it very soon.

The TCU should throw a code for a sol failure but it could be something else. Some diagnosis needs to be done in person.
    1. Proper fluid level
    2. Proper fluid condition
    3. Proper fluid.
    4. Scan for stored code
    5. Visual inspection for other failed parts

None of which can be done online.
My tranny was lagging and showing signs of it going out. I did a partial flush and it made it worse.
UPDATE*.....well today I been calling shops for quotes on my tranny...upon doin that...I explained my situation and the guy said it could b my axle some how disconnected cuz he find it odd my tranny would just stop functioning without any signs of a failing tranny also with no CEL...but sadly I dont get off work till 7pm which itll b too dark to check....but just wanted to share a possibility
It would have to break the c clip holding it in and come out completely to do what that tech told you. Doubt it BC you would see the axle out and hanging.
