I'm planning to start a project on a drag car this summer and I wanted to find a car that I could make very fast for very cheap. I was looking into the civic hatchbacks because they're so light but getting some real hp out of those things seems to be pretty expensive. Everyone keeps telling me to go with 80's era chevy's because there are a ton of parts for them and they're cheap to make fast , but the problem is that my knowledge is with tuner cars, not with muscle cars, and I would need to learn a lot before working on one of those things. My budget is around 6,000. i've seen people make 10 second cars for 2,000 so I know I can get a pretty quick car for this price. But I don't know which path to take . Please Help!!!

yea a camaro with a 383 and some nitrous would be easy. if u know basic engines. then you are ok. just gut the camaro and call it a day. for 6 id say u could build an 11sec car. another popular one is the foxbody mustang with the 5.0 in it. i personally am a chevy fan, so an 86 camaro with a 383 and 150 shot should be more than enough

I can help you if you decide to go with a Honda. 1st of all though,,, there's NO WAY someone is running a 10 second 1/4 mile and only spending 2G's to do it!!!

If you have $6000 to spend, you can get a decent Honda CRX Si and get it into the low 13's fairly easy. And there's a few different ways to do it. If you shop around you can probably hit the high 12's with 6G's! I had a 91 CRX and all I had done to it was a SOHC V-TEC, a cam (i 4get which one), and a 50 shot of nitrous. I ran a 14.1 with it! I think I spent like 800 bucks for all that.

If you get a little hatch of crx. you can but one stripped down. and that woud cost 400-600 bucks for the shell. You can mix and match a k series engine k20/k24 or a k20 from a rsx-s. In a bone stock k swapped hatch that is cutted on drag radials will run a mid to low 12. then maybe later in the year you can continue on and maybe build the head so on and so forth.

i would say a hatch with k20/4 or s13 240 with a sr20 if you want a turbo motor base. and plan to spend way more than $2k on a race car. reliable speed costs a lot of money, the motor mounts alone for a k20 swap into a hatch is about 700 plus motor, tranny, installation, new axles, and so on

I think I like the camaro idea. Where can I get a 383? and would it be better to drop in a crate engine or rebuild the internals and supercharge the stock one?

A K-swap to a CRX will cost too much. I say if you go with a CRX, get a B16 motor, fully built for nitrous and let it scream at 8500 rpm with a 100 direct port shot.

IMO, the best car for your project is a 1982 Mustang with the 5.0L

look on craigslist in your area. if nees be u could get a 350, then put a stroker kit and make it a 383. wouldnt be that expensive, a crate engine would take all your money, and internals wouldnt be needed unless your trying to make like 600+hp

Nothing is as cheap as older model Mustangs 01-03 manual transmission and you get a crate motor dropped in that biatch.

400 whp easy. under 7,000k with vehicle and motor? Can't beat that.

^^^ yeah, but the '82 is shorter and lighter .... and the pushrod engine is cheap!!!

ey 06tcdude, so are you suggesting putting in a crate? or no
    • Dec 08, 2008 8:02:19 pm
I wonder what you could do with the H22. I understand those engines are BEASTLY when modded.
    • Dec 08, 2008 8:08:41 pm
id say no. not unless u want to spend all ur budget on just the motor. Did a quick google search and a crate was anywhere from 3500 to 7000. buy a running used 350 or 383, im gunna get another 80s s-10blazer and go v-8. 350 or 383, with nitrous, lookin at about 450-500hp

Camaro/Mustang would be the best budget drag car.

You can get a great body for between 3-4k. Parts to put the motor well over 300HP is maybe another 2-3k on top of that. Some better rubber and for roughtly 6-7k you are off to the races.

Honda is NOT CHEAP to make into a drag car. Plain and simple. Going that fast with 4 cyl is NOT cheap.

Get yourself an 88'-91' CRX Si. Find a B18C5 Integra Type-R engine/tranny. Go to and get all the necessary mounts and wiring. Install everything. You'll be whoopin' on Mustangs, Camaros, Trans-Ams, and Grand Nationals all day!!!

    go mustang...shits are diirrrrtyyy
    • Dec 08, 2008 10:57:56 pm
^^^^ u got that right. he has a budget, and 6 wont cover all the parts the mustang would break. shit they are.hondas arent cheap, and nothin sounds better than a v-8 at WOT
    • Dec 08, 2008 11:56:14 pm
I suggest staying away from Honda.. Not because they can't make power. But nice looking and fast Hondas are like good dreams, you wake up in the morning and they're gone.
