I recently purchased a Scion tC 2006. It has a 5-speed manual transmission. The 5th gear does not stay in unless i hold it with my hands. Often i also need to force it into 2nd and sometimes 1st and reverse. Do i need to do a transmission swap or just fix something with the linkage? If so, does anyone know any place i can purchase a used transmission for $400 or less? Looking to swap it myself instead of paying the ridiculous labor charge for transmission problems...

sounds like it might be the 5th gear shift forks, the detents also. Sounds like you'd need that rebuilt. I always say better the devil you know than the one you don't. I'd much rather re-build my own, at least I know what's wrong with it! You might do an internet search for forged gears (for scion tc) if you want to rebuild everything while you're in there
You can try changing manual transmission fluid. Redline mt90 or a similar fluid might make enough différence that the car is easier to use. There is a diy write up on this forum. It may not resolve all issues, but it might buy some time to plan and prepare for a proper repair. Another thing that helps is to warm up the car for a couple of minutes before driving, esp when cold. It seems that gen1 tc manual requires extra care and careful gear shifting.
