When I bought my car it only came with the valet key. I bought a key off eBay and got the lock/unlock/etc part programed (disappointed it doesn't beep or honk the horn). I haven't gotten around to programing it to start the car but thought in the meantime I would at least get it cut. I have been to both a Home Depot and a lOwes and both said they cannot do it and recommended I go to a locksmith. I said I didnt need it programmed just cut and they said same thing. Any thoughts on why they cant (other than m not buying the key from them)?

yeah we've run into this before a locksmith could do it for you but if you go to a local hardware store like an ace or True Value they can cut that key for you. but if you need to program it it's going to require the dealership to do it or a locksmith seriously if you were just looking to make a copy just unlock the doors but not start the car then yeah they could do it for you at ace or True Value
hey backroad.. any update about your key?

I went to Ace Hardware and they cut the key for me for $3. They did not program the transponder though. From what I gathered they would not have a way to ring out the labor when the cust. brings in their own key. Their sku is a package that includes the key and programming for $149. Either that or their machine is only set up to code their keys. The fact they cut the key tells me they prob would have programmed it if they could. Problem is the cut was not exact enough and the key does not turn in the ignition. Will need to have them tweek it then found a video I will try to program it myself

What is so weird is that I bought a new key and fob for my 2006 scion tc and when I went to autozone to get my new battery I asked them if they can cut my key for me and the manager told me that if its not one of their keys then it wont cut it but she will try it just to be sure. Truth be told it actually accepted it and cut my key no problem, at autozone. Just saying you can always give that a try.
