I recently got my tc last week. It was my first manual. I'm getting pretty good at driving the tc now. But I would like to know in about how many rpms do you guys shift from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, etc. Same goes for downshifting.

Upshifting: If you want to save gas and don't drive like a bat out of hell, it's around 3000 rpms.

Downshifting: This is tricky b/c you don't want your clutch and gears taking the weight of the stop when your brakes are much better at it and cheaper to replace. When downshifting, you have to know where the high end of the next gear would be. You don't want to downshift from 5th to 4th when you're going 80.

I am going to take a stab at this but anyone else please jump in:

    1st: 0 - ~15mph
    2nd: ~15 - ~25mph
    3rd: ~25 - ~40mph
    4th: ~40 - ~60mph
    5th: ~60+

If you use this scale to down shift, you should be ok. Just remember, if you're going to go from 5th to 4th, make sure you down shifter a little under 60 mph to you don't get a high rev. Then from 4th to 3rd, a little under 30 (between 25-30 mph) should be ok. Anything lower than that you really shouldn't have to do and it puts a lot of stress on your gears and clutch b/c of the high amount of low end torque we have. Just try to use your brakes more, but if you down shift, use them as well. Like I said, it's cheaper to replace brakes and rotors and not clutches and gear boxes.

And you'll learn the RPM levels as you learn to downshift by speed. From 5th to 4th at around 60mph, you'll be at around 3000-3200 rpm in 4th. Just use this when you need a little more assistance in braking. Take your time and try this on an open back road. Just go slow and learn your RPMs. Don't try to do this on the road while driving and never attempting it or you could be in for some bad times (very bumpy ride due to releasing clutch too early, grinding gears, accident b/c you're paying attention to your shifting and not to traffic........) Just take it on a side road and learn slowly.

ya the tc was my frist manual car on the road so much fun to stall infront of everyone the first day but by the second day i was doing waaaaaay better u will b suprised on how quick u will cathc on and i think web has it for downshift points ill have to test it out
    • Oct 31, 2006 9:26:23 pm
yea definatly listen to WEB he is a smart guy knos his shit. but when ur racing what is the redline when u are driving. like 1,2,3,4. and what MPH are u about. thanks.

this is what i do when im racing
    1 0-~30
    2 30-~55
    3 55-~80
    4 80-~110
    5 110-130

Speed wise, I'm not sure the shift points when racing. I don't pay attention to that, only the tach.

My first gear I get a nice launch by popping the clutch at 2000 rpm and flooring it. Almost no spin. After that, run each gear up to about 5800 rpm and shift as quick as possible. I usually hold the rpms up above 4500 that way so I'm always in torque/hp range without dropping to low and slowly bogging down.
    • Nov 01, 2006 11:43:03 am

Yeah Web^^^. Good call, since our torque peaks above 4000RPM you would def want to stay above that. Any lower and ur right, ud start bogging down depending on how far below 4000 you went, I know from experience this is my first manual, too. Also, our peak HP sits at 6000RPM so the closer you can get to that, the better, just don't go over!
    • Nov 01, 2006 11:47:31 am
Correct. There is a peak that we reach at about 5800-6000 rpm but if you go over that and into the red: 1)you'll be stopped by our rev limiter, and 2)you'll begin to lose HP past the peak. That's why when you look at dyno graphs, the hp/tq lines rise to the peak and then slowly begin to come down before they let off the gas. That is the overall loss in hp/tq after peak is reached.

But if your going to down shift make sure and rev mach don’t stress your transition. If your going around a corner and find that you are going to fast to take the corner don’t just down shift to slow down you must rev match to there will not be any access wheel spin and it will keep you out of a ditch and save your trany. It takes practice but it pays for it self.

Yes, also known as double clutching.

    Check out this link:
    Double Clutch Video]Double Clutch

If you don't get it from the video, keep watching. It's a great video to learn from.

    Here's the steps:
    Clutch In....Neutral....Clutch Out....Rev match with gas pedal.....Clutch In....Lower Gear....Clutch Out....Gas

well when im racing i shift at rounghly 6300-6600. im not sure why it is so high but when i installed my header and spipe the redline went up alot. is that a bad thing or a good thing.
    • Nov 01, 2006 12:39:04 pm
Your redline will not move b/c it's controlled by the computer. The only time it will go past 6200 is if you have an Emanage control. Headers and exhaust will "move" your rpm power band, but not visually. Have you done LED swaps on your cluster? If so, the tach needle is incorrectly positioned. It will only go up to 6200 without that E-manage controller.
    • Nov 01, 2006 1:09:44 pm
The rev limiter gose off at 6200 or 6300 cant go past that.
    • Nov 01, 2006 6:01:55 pm
well i will have to have a camera the next time i go the track and race. b/c im posative that my redline is over 6200. and there is no led swaop on the cluster. idk why but there is a thing on teh dyno for a MMW header that says the redline of the car is at 6600 also. but ill have to get a viof it
    • Nov 01, 2006 6:19:11 pm
I think your right. I've hit the rev limiter and it was past 6200. 6200 is the peak HP there’s no point in going over unless your setup is still building power past the 6200, which the header may do. I apologize for posting inaccurate information.
    • Nov 01, 2006 6:46:14 pm
hey its kool man. i was just wonderin if that was normal. but thanks. so u goin turbo yet or what
    • Nov 01, 2006 7:06:57 pm
Yes This weekend I’m going to switch out the pistons.
    • Nov 02, 2006 1:17:27 am
so 6200 is the peak but at what is the rev limmiter set to?
i'v had 2 people at separated occasions tell me the gearing(RPM and shift wise)in my car is weird the car red lines at 6200 but it doesn't feel like the car is ready to shift yet. this was a friend who drives a manual also. i drove his car (no tach) and sure enough the car literly
tells you when to shift, you can just feel it.

i'v also been told this by a female friend, she was driving it normal(around 3000 to 4) and she said she had to look at the tach cause she could not tell when to shift by sound and feel.
    • Nov 02, 2006 8:43:34 am
Hey I was wrong. Redline for our cars is 6500, not 6200. 6200 is where the red begins but it maxes out (limited) at 6500).
    tC spec

    Quote:
    Redline: 6500 rpm

Max hp is reached at 5700 for the 05-06 models and 6000 for the 07 models. Beyond that, you're hitting the downslope of the hp/tq curve. B/c we don't have a VTEC setup, we have the more gradual gains throughout the entire RPM band. There is no need to go any higher unless (as was said above), you have specific parts that enable you to reach those power outputs (turbo, internals, emanage...).
