Hey, i-m just becoming a senior in high school this September, and I-ve already had my mind set on the tC for a few months now. I-ve been trying to read and absorb as much info as possible when it comes down to leasing vs buying, and what mods to do first. My monthly income is between $1400-1600, and I plan on putting down between 5-6k in late December, early January, gotta get license first though in October . Considering this is going to be my first car, i-m pretty sure i-ll be satisifed with it performance wise, so I plan on doing some visual upgrades first. I don-t plan on doing mods right away though, so I was thinking about getting the car with the ground effects kit installed...although I do want to put a kaminari polyurethane kit on eventually. Oh and another thing I noticed in the -build your own- section of scion-s site, is that if you want side airbags, you can-t have the auto-dimming mirror, and i-m not about to sacrifice safety for a mirror. So what I want to know is, how much would it be to buy an aftermarket auto-dimming mirror simliar to the one toyota can provide, but without the homelink feature (i don-t have a garage anyway). So guys...what do you think some good visual upgrades would be? Oh and...would a drop really be sensible if i wanna get the kaminari kit? I do live in NYC, and the streets aren-t the greatest..Thankss

Heres my opinoin on the situation...I know they-re -accidents- and they-re not suppose to happen...thats why they call them accidents... But overally, you rally don-t need SIDE airbags... the car has such a strong frame, that the only safety your-e going to realy have with those side airbags is a black eye, instead of a black arm... haha...Aftermarket wise, not sure of any of those mirrors, auto-dimming isn-t really needed, just juse that -flip- feature to auto-dim and night. lol...Secondly, if you plan on getting the Kaminari kit, why dont- you just do it? The kit is for sale for 700$, and you can paint it for about 400$. making it $1100...aroudn the ball park for the factory kit... if im wrong about the factory kit, at least you-ll have enough saved up to go towads the kaminari kit, isntead of waiting... TRUST... just get the plain tC, and buy the kaminari kit, it-ll be about the same price...If you want to drop, and u don-t want to scratcha lot, go with the TRD kit, as its a sensible, drop, but you wont be scraping as much.. good luck with that tC...

thanks for the reply, i-m probably going to stick with the ground effects kit from toyota seeing as how after dropping the car, a kaminari kit would probably make the tC ridiculously close to the ground, and that-s definitely not a good thing here in NYC....streets suck. Any other suggestions?

You-re a high school student making $1500 a month? How many hours do you work? And where can I apply? One thing to note about the side air bags, I-m fairly certain they help a bit with insurance. My auto insurance went up $12 a month when I got rid of my -94 escort and got the tC.

lol well makin 1500 a month over the summer really....400/week (800/check)when i go back to school...it-s gonna drop down to 250/week (500/check).Yea that-s true, I-m not too worried about insurance though, it-s going to be under my grandmothers name, and she lives in long island..which means rates are gonna be low anyway plus i-ll be able to get a really low apr because her husband is toyota dealer Oh and btw, I-m working 40hrs/week which = $10/hr, not bad for a first job don-t ya think? Lol I got the job through a friend though whose father owns the company...I seem to have alot of connections  Oh and I work for a billing company for hospitals, which means I deal with alot of insurance companies, and I-ve noticed that Geico seems to be the best when it comes to quality of the Reps, i-m not sure how their rates are, but their going up on my list of ins. companies just because of the personalities of their employees... Edit: Not sure how the whole insurance thing ties into anything lol..

yea i-m lookin to have a new job by the time school starts in september...or at least a raise....needa have more spending money seeing as how i-ll have to pay about $300 a month for car + insurance, not leavin enough to spend/save on other things...haha any suggestions on jobs?? lol..oh and yea, if anyone knows of some good places to buy/install parts in the NY metro area, feel free to list. Thanks alot for the replies everyone.

Considering you-re a minor, finding $10/hr from a company that will guarantee you full-time hours is VERY good.
    • Jul 25, 2005 10:16:36 pm
True bofett, don-t think i-m taking the job for granted, I know that I was lucky to have my 1st job pay $10/hr, especially considering I didn-t submit a resume or anything like that. Although, I was supposed to be working in Manhattan this summer at a computer company making about 20/hr, but I was really late when it came to submitting my resume. But regardless, I-m trying to save up as much, wanna put down at least 5k on the tC, then HOPEFULLY try to find out about sponsors because it-d be really nice to be able to pay off the car using money from them. If I-m unfortunate with that though, my parents will probably pay the car off as a graduation gift at the end of the school year in June. Sponsor info?? I know there-s tons of threads on -em, but still, if anyone-s just passing through this thread and they happen to know some info, please post it up. Once again, thank you for the replies.

Damn, that-s a lot of money. I-m only making 6 an hour as a bank teller...heh. But I gotta ask one thing: How-s your academics? Working with that kind of wage for a part time worker is terrific, but if you are spending so much time at work and letting school stuff slip, you-re hurting yourself in the long run! Don-t be deceived by quick, easy money for now as a substitute for good education, college, and getting a real job in the future!

That was back when i was 16, 21 now.... I think college is a waist of time and money for most people(not saying going to college is stupid). Lets face it pretty much everyone has gone or goes to college now adays and I would say about 15% do and make the money that they wanted to. The other 85% are working a different job that gets decent money to get you by or getting into a job that just wasnt what they expected. For me, i work for the So Cal Gas Co. I would have never thought i would be here right now but anyways they are going to pay for my college and im going to be making ok money with them, but im just using them for beniffits, retirement, and a steady paycheck for now. Im also a Notary and i make about $200 a signing for about 1 hour worth of work. I do about 4 signings a month so thats an extra $800 in my pocket. Soon i will be getting into forclosures and home loans and when that hits everything else is small penies. Just because you go to college doesnt assure you that you will have the job or the money you want.oh and im a high school grad with 2 years of college that i will probly never use.
    • Jul 26, 2005 7:11:43 pm
Actually, college is a waste of time, ONLY if you-re going just go go... If you-re going to find yourself there, its worth alot more. College degrees mean alot more on a resume than a highschool GED or diploma for that matter...even if it is from a Community College. Fact is, people rather hire interns who have experience in their field through education....if you put down in your resume -know how to _____- but have no background, chances are it will be overlooked.Becomming a realtor is great money, but how many Highschoolers have that dream/ambition already? Eventually the market will be flooded with realtors and mortage brokers and such, that the job won-t have decent pay because the customer spread is so high.If you go to a good college, and put yourself out there as an intern and into the business world, i still say you have a better chance of getting into the white collar work force.

    Well put TRD_tC.
    • Jul 26, 2005 9:03:09 pm
Lol...how-d this turn into a discussion about education? Anyway, I do plan on attending college after this final school year....plan on majoring in both business management and computer engineering (although the latter is flooded already just like TRD_tC said about becoming a realtor). Regardless though, I-m into computer related fields (designing, engineering, etc.) and I figure that also having a degree in business management can only look better on my resume. And Calirow, grades are pretty decent, as well as SAT-s lol...But yea, back to what I had originally asked lol, anyone know any sponsor info?? I-d really love to be able to use some money from sponsors to help pay off the car as well as pay for mods. So...any info?
    • Jul 26, 2005 9:11:58 pm
No idea about sponsor info, I wish i could have someone pay for my mods. I think most of them people who get sponsored have to know somebody, otherwise eveyone would be trying to get sponsored and getting free shit.
    • Jul 26, 2005 9:17:31 pm
    Very true...
    • Jul 26, 2005 9:20:51 pm
ANYWAYS BACK TO THE ORIGINAL TOPIC................If your gonna get a kit then dont waste your money on the factory one because theres really not that much of a difference so I would go w/the kaminari kit(polyurethane), get some 18-s and drop it but just dont drop it to much. I-m telling you your gonna regret getting that factory crap cuz I almost did but then I saw that the car still looked the same so i changed my mind. I was get the kaminari but I changed my mind and im gonna get the lambo doors 1st
