I-m very sorry if this has already been addressed in another thread, but I haven-t seen anything on here that was answering this question exactly. My question is this:If we don-t want to buy TRD or Toyota-offered aftermarket parts like the AEM and Hotchkis parts, can we buy other aftermarket parts and have them installed by Toyota and still stay within warranty? It-s obvious to me that many people would prefer to buy parts that aren-t offered by Toyota either to separate their car from the crowd, or because they prefer other parts to the TRD equivalents, and so I feel that it-s not just me that would be interested to know this. I-m very wary of voiding my warranty, but I also don-t want to wait until it-s up to tune my car. Also, I don-t have much mechanical experience, and wouldn-t want to screw with certain things on my car personally anyway. So will Toyota install other parts that you bring to them, and if so, would they keep the car under warranty?

No and No, I swear this feels like Deja Vu :?The dealer might if you know them well enough, but I doubt it plus they will rape you on labor. You warranty on another product will just be with the manufacturer and thats not much.Anyone else want to butt in on this one

thats pretty much how i feel about it. if u get the aftermarket part, then install it urself if u can..if not take it a import shop or any shop at that and have them install it.

Thanks. I guess I-ll just have to stick with OEM parts for the big stuff then, and for cosmetics, I-ll do it myself because I doubt putting something on like the door sill protectors will void my warranty, or putting in a stereo (I-m of course referring to the warranty on the whole car, not just individual parts like the stereo). I-m not in the mood to void my warranty just yet, though down the road a ways, I might not care anymore.

It has been my expierience that they will not install anything other than OEM/TRD. At least from Toyota anyway. It has also been my expierience that dealers have honored my warranty even though the faulty part in question was related to, or could have been somehow blamed on an aftermarket modification. As long as the aftermarket part was intended for use on your vehicle and, installed CORRECTLY, they should always honor your warranty anyway. In short, when going with aftermarket parts, make sure it was intended for use on your car, then get it installed by a qualified shop/mechanic.

So if I stick with quality manufacturers (rather than having this kid I know fashion me a CAI, lol), and I have them installed by a reputable mod shop, I should be good? I just feel iffy since this is my first new car. Sorry, too, for pushing this issue, though I-m sure I-m not the only person in this position.

In that case you should-nt have any problems in the first place because its quality parts, quality install. What i-m saying is, even in the event you do have problems with that part or another related component, They would have to prove that the failure/damage was due to the aftermarket part/install. If the aftermarket part is the cause of failure, warranty is void for that repair.I had a set of custom dual pipes put on my truck. I took it in to the dealer for a exuast manifold leak. I figured they were going to tell me that my new exuast install caused it. I was wrong. They found that the intake manifold was warped. they replaced it no problem. They asked me where I got the exaust put on, I told them, they said -Good thing you did it there, they did a nice job, they even used the factory hangers, If they didn-t we wouldn-t cover it. A lot of the manifold problems we see are from improperly installed exaust systems.- Hope this bit of my expierience helps.

Very much so. Thanks a lot! That really eases my concerns.

Esentially it-s up to your dealer ... whether or not they want to be nice to you or not. From the dealers point of view, I can see why they would void warranties after aftermarket part installs. The possibility that a part that isn-t theirs comprimising another piece of the car is a liability for them.

well from m yown experience, i am my own mechanic, i will not buy a car if i cant do my own maintenance. i sat down with the service manager from liberty toyota, and talked to him about all the do-s and dont-s with scion-s. keep in mind scion-s are aimed for our gen. we are expected to do stuff to these things....its what they were built for. as long as the part you put on(correctly), is a good part(brand helps), you write it all down in the book(keep reciepts)...you can do it all and it will not effect the waranty AT ALL!!! HOWEVER.........if you bought a cheap product, or didnt install it that good, and it IS( not could be...IS ) what caused the damage....then that part and that part only will not be covered under warranty.

i am so very sorry for posting this thread as many people will tell me its been talked about over and over, but ive searched many threads only coming up short of my question being answered. ive also perused the the FAQ on TSB, and close, but so far. i understand that warranty will not be void if you buy a certified part, but my question is: is it mandatory to get that certified part (which does not void warranty) installed by a certified scion/toyota dealer to keep the warranty. im sure we all would rather save tons of money and have an independent installer do the job. my dealership is something like 85 an hour, and above that they said they wont install springs for me, but i dont want to void my warranty just because they didnt install it. thank you. delete thread if need be.
