I was watching some drag racing on tv, and they were running the 2005 Mustang GT. Well remember the post by Tigertc that said the tc runs a 15.56 1/4 mile? The Mustang GT was struggling to keep it around 15.5seconds. The fastest run was 14.59, but every other run was 15.5 - 16 seconds. Pretty f-king terrible for a v8 if you ask me.

What is wrong with Ford? How come Honda can squeeze 240hp from a 4cyl, but Ford is struggling to get 240hp from a v8? Awful! Although, it feels pretty good knowing I could own a mustang GT (again!) lol

    what do you guys think?

Ok.... it's the driver, not the car. The new gt's make 300hp, before that it was around 260 for the sohc 4.6L, around 320 for the dohc cobra 4.6L (pre s/c'ed versions), 215 for the pre '99 4.6L (horrible head design), and 215-220 for the old 5.0L OHV from '95-earlier. Yes, I did run a 15.56 1/4, but I ALSO ran a 15.9, 16.1, and 17.00 that night. Mistakes happen, specially with a manual. Ford isn't neccissarily struggling to get the power OUT, it's keeping the smog nazi's from taking it away. V8's create more emission problems, therefore are usually more detuned from factory. But ford has the same problem GM and DaimlerChrysler have....keeping up with foreign engine technology. All their stuff is years behind, but that gap is starting to close. I mean hell.....Dodge and Chevy still use the OHV engines for their main sport cars (corvette and viper). Back to the driver issue. Those that have been to the track realize that you probably aren't gonna get anywhere close to advertised numbers from a magazine about 90% of the time. There's always traction and misshifts to worry about. Hell, i've seen 2003-up Cobra's (proven 12 second car) run 15's and 16's consistantly because of high track temps and driver error. Sometimes you do run better then mag numbers, most of the time slower. My time came because the moon, sun, earth, stars, etc all came aligned at the same moment for me to have perfect conditions. I admit i screwed up a perfect night by not adjusting to the track gripping right away. I would have had maybe another run in that 15.5 mark if I did. But then again i'm just an amateur, same as everyone else that buys these cars. The tC will NOT run 15.5's all day, it is a consistant high 15/low 16 second car, that doesn't mean faster is not possible. I remember going on the highway at about 80mph and coming across a mustang gt that wanted to play. I won! Why? It was a '96-'98 GT, auto, and convertible. What does that mean? Well that year gt got 215 hp....weak, mainly due to a new engine (new 4.6L sohc replaced the old 5.0L ohv) which had a horrible combustion chamber and runner design in the head. Auto explains itslef. And convertible means it's just that more heavier. Add all that together and you probably have one of the slowest gt's stock. Now, do I go brag about beating gt's all day long? Hell no, cause i know I can't and I got lucky one time. Did I probably make him feel like a fool losing to a scion?? HELL YES!

    yeah no kidding!

If you race a mustang GT there is a 90% chance you will lose. Only way you may win is that you race from a dig and the driver sucks and gets a shitty launch and spins the tires all over the place.

I've ran against a newer GT. Not the newest design but the year right before. It might have been an '04. He had some kind of gauges on his car and racing numbers. He beat me by about 4 car lengths. They're not that fast but definitely faster than a tC. Throw on a turbo and the tC is a different animal altogether.
    • Dec 13, 2005 1:16:20 pm
but a turbo on a mustang will put it ahead of a turbo'd tC by 4 car lengths again

Bottom line....2.4L 4 cyl tc=almost as fast as 5.0L 8 cyl mustang. Gotta love that american engineering!

Please tell me you're joking......and when did almost count?
    • Dec 14, 2005 2:36:24 am
I'm dead serious...WHAT ARE U TALKIN ABOUT? Almost counts when Mustangs are slow as whale shit...and they are...so almost counts! Did I say "as fast" even though theres about a second difference in et's? NO. I said almost as fast because in a quartermile, tc's are almost as fast as stangs...I feel like I'm talkin to a kindergartener!

What the hell does the "when did almost count" quote have to do with anything. Considering the difference in displacement, power, torque and drivetrain between the stang and tc...I'M EMBARRASSED TO BE AN AMERICAN! Plus factor in the stang's rep as a legendary "fast" car and its hefty price tag and the end result is Mustang=Joke!

Hope that clarified everything for ya TIGertc

When did almost count means exactly that. Almost will get you mediocricy out of life. Almost is not winnig, it's a nice try and that's it. Almost doesn't count when things matter. Almost only counts in horseshoes and handgranades. Etc, etc, etc. And congratulations on comparing an engine design from the late 70's to one designed in the 90's.....hmmm...wonder which one will be more technoligically advanced . I don't know if you even been to the track but 1 second is a VERY long distance between two cars and wouldn't be considered almost by anyone in the racing scene. And please don't come back with with something like "why don't you come to PA and I'll show you how we roll" , like you've done a few other times on this board with members who disagree with you.

You forgot a very important factor that the tC has a HUGE advantage of.....WEIGHT!
