OK, so my grill has been bothering me forever. The entire lower section has all this green crap that won't ever come off. So.....I've decided I just need to repaint the freakin' thing. Problem is sanding it all will be a major PITA. Think I would be alright primering the crap out of it and then painting? Or should I just find a creative way to go about sanding?

    Any thoughts/opinions/tips appriciated

maybe just run through it lightly with some sand paper, then primer, then paint, too bad it is plastic, but ya should need to sand it down to much anyway

i remember you bringing this up a ways back, i thought you ended up getting rid of them and going with the FIG grilles

The only realy way to prep something with corrosion it to get rid of it completely. The grille would need to be media blasted to clean it off.

Too much primer does not make a good surface to paint on so keep that in mind.

Only other suggestion would be to clean if off with some kind of fine wire brush.

Or Rustoleum with "stops rust" on the can.

Nah, I stayed w/ the VRDs. I really like the style of them, just not all the other BS.

I like the brush idea, gonna give that a try. I just don't want all of the corrosion to eat through to the new paint ya know. I just can't imagine trying to sand all of that. Maybe if it was a FIG....those look so much easier since they aren't raised or anything.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have some time next weekend to work on everything so I'll see how it turns out!

you could use a pressure washer to get it off. but if you cant priming the hell out it would work in a since but make sure you let it dry for minimum if 20 minutes between each layer of primer you put on. also i would recommend using some kind of adhesion promoter. Duplicolor makes one that i stand by for life. i've used it on all my interior painting and it works wonders for adhering primer to plastic.
