Hey I installed a cold air intake into my car and the check engine lights came on. So I dissconnected the batteries and reconnected back, the check engine light turned off for a few miles than it reappeared. So I dissconnected the batteries again and reconnected it, and the same thing happened -the check engine light goes off for a few miles than reappears. I don't know what to do, how to turn it off. Theres nothing wrong with my car but the check engine light is on for some reason. Help me if you know. Thanks.

How long did you leave the battery disconnected? Did you reconnect it and immediately start to drive the car? Are all the hose connections tight? What intake did you get? Are there any crimped hoses anywhere? Pics?

I left the battery disconnected about a minute or so before i reconnected it. After I reconnected it, I drove around pretty much right after that and the check engine light was gone for a good few miles than it reappeared again. I'm pretty sure all the hose connections are tight.

I gathered some parts from autozone and built my own intake. The intake works and everything. Me and my friends been building intakes for ours cars this way so I'm pretty sure it's not because it's a cheap intake system, but then again I could be wrong.

I have some pictures but I don't know how to post it on here. Tell me how and I will. Thanks.

Actually I just uploaded a picture of the CAI in my profile if you want to take a look at it.

I would verify that the hose and connections are all tight, and make sure that the MAF sensor is tight too.

Just FYI, that's a short ram, not cold air. But disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes. Disconnect the MAF sensor while you do it. After about 10 minutes, plug the sensor in and then the battery. If you plug the battery in first and then the MAF, the sensor will possibly shoot on. Let it idle for about 5 minutes and then drive it NORMALLY, not dogging it. Tell us what happens.

hey thanks man, the light turned off after i did all that.

No problem. It's always a good idea that after you disconnect the battery you turn the key just to make sure there an no resistors retaining any current. The 5 minute gap before reconnect is plenty of time for the current to exit through all the grounds. Most is lost instantaneously but some electricity is still held within resistors.

    Glad to hear it worked.

If you know anyone who works at autozone, ask them to come out and erase the code with their scanner. Don't say it too loud b/c they're not supposed to do that, but ask them to test the car out with their OBD II scanner. It'll read the code, let you know what the problem probobly is, and then you can delete it. FREE

I took it to autozone once before and had them scanned it. It came out blank. It's only a week old car so I know for sure there's nothing wrong with it. But anyways I can just get them to clear the light by deleting something with their scanner?
    • Sep 15, 2006 2:28:26 pm
The scanner has a read and erase function on it. I used to work there for 3 years, did it all the time. They won't delete it now unless you know someone b/c it's something against policy or some BS. If you know anyone there or get someone who looks new, they could do it. Just plug it in to the under dash port, turn the car to the ON position, click read, see what it says, click Erase, then ok, unplug and turn car on and the light will be off and the code will be erased out of the ECU. If it comes back on, then there's something wrong. Make sure all your vacuum hoses are reconnected and the MAF connector is plugged in firmly. If you can, take some good pics of the vacuum hoses around the intake and the connections and post them. I'll take a look at them to see if I can see anything. Where are you located BTW?

Alright cool, I'm going to go to autozone to see if I can spot out someone who can help me. If it doesn't work I'll post more pictures. I'm from Cincinnati.

Ok cool....Damn, I'm in MD. I was going to see if you wanted to meet up b/c I could get it done at the one I worked at. They might be different up there. Good luck

I think I know what your problem is. You have an 07, but have a injen intake for the 05-06's. Scion changed the MAP sensor on the 07's, which probably is why you are having a problem. Another thing you could try is to hook it up as a CAI. Sometimes on the Short rams the MAP sensor is so close to the filter that it messes up the reading and reads too much air and is dumping fuel and making your car run pig rich, which might throw a CEL on your emissions.

So I went up to Autozone and tried getting someone to help me. I had some them scan it and they said it didnt scanned anything so theres nothing wrong with my car but they won't delete the check engine light for me. Is there anywhere else I can go? I'll post some good pictures up tomarrow to see if you guys can see what's up.

InlikeFlint, the short ram intake I have is made up from parts from Autozone so it's not limited to the 05 and 06 Scion tC's. Right? Or should I just extend the intake so it's not as close as it is to the sensor? And also are you saying that maybe the sensor is reading too much air and I'm wasting gas? Really hope that isn't the case

Make sure all your connections are tight. Especially since it's pieced together piping, you have to make sure that all of your coupled joints are air tight.
    • Sep 24, 2006 6:07:51 pm
I got a new account. But anyways yeah all the connections are tight. There's a picture of the intake in my profile, I don't know how to get it to show up on this page. I can't find anything wrong with the intake and yet the check engine light is on. I'm about to just take uninstall the intake and put the engine back to normal since this light won't go away.

its not just some dumb policy... its against the law for them to come out and clear your codes.

That was put into action 2.5 years after I worked there and it was due to the fact that 3 seperate occurances happened where the customer blamed Autozone for "not telling them" what the problem was and just erasing the code. Now, b/c of STUPID customers like those people, people can't have the code erased. It's only part of an amended policy clause they added AFTER the fact just to protect themselves. It's NOT a law that they can't delete the codes.
