    Hey guys,

Like the title says im getting a bike soon. Ive been looking at a few different brands and sizes. Ive been lookin at the new ninjas, since they are basically complete changed over there past version. I really like the new Ninja 250r, and i heard it is great for a begineer rider. I have rode on my friends cbr1000 before and it was really fast, i dont need that much power. Plus the a brand new ninja 250r is 4k. Anyone that has a bike, do u think ill regret starting out on a 250 instead of a 500 or 650.

You'll have a lot of fun on the 250r. It's an awesome bike to learn on and it's much more fun to ride a slow bike fast and a fast bike slow. Plus remember that on top of the 4k, you'll also need to buy gear and a good helmet.

Ahh how refreshing to see someone that wants to start small. Will you regret it. More than likely. Simply because most people become used to the speed and as time goes on the bike feels slower and slower (atleast on a 600 or less). BTW most 650s are beginner/street bikes that tend to not have the massive top end of supersports but have a little more bottom end for street riding. Great motorcycles.

If this will be your first bike you will have a hard time finding somewhere that lets the new 250 go for less than 5k out the door. They are a massive sales hit for Kawi. You may be better getting a used Ninja 250 or 500 for a first bike that your not as fearfull to drop. Albeit it does not look as good as the new 250 does.

The facts on the bike are that you can beat a stock Mustang GT on a Ninja 250. You also will never be able to push that bike to its absolute limit besides in a straight line. I can guarantee that. Most people sell bikes because their bored with them but never have pushed the bike to the point that its at the absolute limit of the bikes capabilities.

If your heart is set on a brand new 250 then invest in some frame sliders for yourself incase you drop it (which you WILL). otherwise I would recommend getting an older 250 or 500 and learning on that and saving the money that you would of payed into buying new to put towards a bigger bike when you have your basics down pact and have confidence.

I will say this although heavy... if you want a great bike to start on that will cost you right at/around 2000 dollars check out a 98-07 Suzuki Katana 600. She is a heavy girl but its a bulletproof bike that is a great bike to learn on (Its what I started on and rode for 2 and a half years til I sold it the other week). Not as good as the 250/500 as a starter but definitely one to put on your list of bikes to look into.

1 more thing. Check around your local racetracks if you purchase the new 250. There is a racing series dedicated just to the Ninja 250 that may be alot of fun to get involved with if interested.

My boss is a motercycle mechanic and he says don't trust anything that doesn't have a K int the brand name
so stick to Kawasaki and Suzuki I say go strait for a 600 because they will have the lower end to get going and a little more top end than a 250 or 500. 600's are light bikes and they will take a while for you to get bored with really the only reason to get anything bigger is if you yourself are bigger my friends dad weighs like 250 or so and he has a Kawasaki 1100 and he has never pushed the bike to it's fullest potential and this guy used to own a supra

    First bike?

Go with USED! Check out CycleTrader.com!

You will drop it.....and drop it.....and some more!!!!

I recommend not buying a new bike for a couple of seasons (I regret that I did). When you buy a new bike it should be the one you want and willing to stick with, right now you have no idea what that is since your a noob.

Also you will get bored of the 250R especially if your intention is to be in the sports bike scene. If you got the supersport personality like alot of us where "Hey! I'm nuts, love putting my knee down, and think its funny to see peoples jaws drop when you pop it up on the highway" then you know the consequences of riding in that fashion and really don't give a shit cause its what gets your blood flowing (check out my signature haha).

Right now I will tell you that you don't have enough experience on a bike to decide which personality you are. There are so many people that think so...go out and buy a 600....take it around the first turn....then drop it off at the dealership with a big load in their pants. I known many riders that started on supersports for a season but it was too much and now they enjoy riding on their hogs.

Riding is an experience and one to each their own. Buy a cheap used small bike (250/500), who cares if it has some rash, and learn to ride. You will build confidence and will also figure out if that badass supersport is for you. Also 250/500 used are cheap and don't depreciate value, you may lose a few hundred bucks when you sell it the next year or so. You buy that new Kawi 250R (which is good lookin), drop it, get bored, and lose a few grand on it!

Ride smart and just get comfortable on a bike....get all the gear....and have fun!!!

Start with a 600. 250's bore pretty quick my buddys gf got a 250 and within 3 months she wanted a 600. Get a weak 600

just remember always wear a helmet
    • Jul 03, 2009 4:05:30 pm
first thing is first, nomatter what kind or size bike you get WEAR YOUR FREAKING GEAR!!! i will say if i'm just going down the road to my parents house or something then i might not wear a jacket but i still have my helmet, gloves, boots and long pants on. if something happens to me dressed like that yes i'll get rashed up but atleast my vital parts of my body that i use more often will still have skin on them. before anyone critisizes me for saying this, yes i have been down and i went down hard. at the time i went down i also had a leather alpinestars jacket, alpinstars gloves with the carbon knuckles, icon leather rideing boots, my helmet and jeans on. i was dressed like that because i was planning on hitting some back roads for a little fun.

anyway moving on, my first bike which i bought just over a year ago is an 08 ZX6R. i bought the bike brand new and its the first bike i have ever owned or even riden by myself. as long as your smart about it you can start out on a 600 and be just fine. don't over push your limits. the accident i was in was on my buddies R6 which i wasn't use to the feel of the brakes causing the rear tire to loose traction and causing me to run into the back of another bike that was swerving infront of me. i was over confident of the bike and it bit me hard. but as i said above i had my gear on and the worst that happened was i had a broken hand from punching the back of the headlight and a few spots of rash. the buckle of my boot beat my foot up rather nice but nothing was broke with it.

if you go on back roads to play around make sure they are dry and that you know them well.

There is no such thing as a weak 600 haha! I have a 650 which is a parallel twin and not considered by the community to be anything bu special but it can get you into trouble extremely fast. A supersport 600 will get you into more since it has double on me when it comes to top end.

Yes people get bored of the 250 really quick but thats because they are over confident. Most of the time is because on a straight line you cant keep up with the bigger bikes.

But ask your friends gf this.....can she put her knee down and tear up the twisties?....can she pop it up, balance it, and keep it up in second gear?.....can she stoppie?

I bet she cant do any of those......especially since she has not had enough riding experience to master thoughs. This is my second riding season on my bike and I'm just getting popping mine up, making the right cuts through turns and getting low.

If you can't do all that on a 250 or even a 500 "sports bike" then your not ready for a "supersport".

I know you say you have experience on your friends CBR1000RR but superports have no power down low (below 10k rpm). Have you twisted that throttle all the way back? If you did then you know how it feels to be sitting on your ass and watching the bike keep going haha. Literbikes take alot of control.....throttle control!!! So much power on demand with relatively no weight. I'm quite confident to say that you have no idea what that bike is capable of doing from riding only it maybe a few times. Don't get cocky!!! That will kill you!!!

Buy a cheap used bike and master it. Once you can do everything I stated then its time to step up to a supersport.

Its not all about looks, even though only 5% of supersports bought in America ever see a track day. Talk with the guys that wear full leathers and drag their kneee....most of them average dropping their bike once a year! Many others rarely do but they ride cause they think it makes them look cool......don't be that guy!!!!
    • Jul 03, 2009 5:48:32 pm
yes i have twisted the throttle all the wayback on my friends cbr1000, and it was like damn, the front started to go up but i let off right away, i didnt try it again after that, i just cruised for a little bit. ill def be getting full gears, the guy who lived up stairs from me is the owner of the bike i rode, and he always goes out with his leathers on, he wont ride it without them on. ive been looking for some used bikes by me, but i couldnt really find any cheap ones. my dad is buying my sister a car, and since i payed for my car myself, he said he will buy me the bike. he only rides harleys and is very pissed im getting crotchrocket lol.
    • Jul 03, 2009 5:55:21 pm
you may have to travel a bit but when I looked a few days ago there were some deals at around s 150 mile radius from me.......almost bounced on this 2001 CBR929RR haha! They are out there but may not be too close but if you can't ride it then you could always rent a u-haul to get it home.
    • Jul 03, 2009 6:07:48 pm
farthest i looked was 100 miles from where i lived, ill look again tonight but at 150 instead. yea i dont have my license yet, and my dad doesnt have his anymore, ill def have to rent a u-haul to get back home.

Word. You can always keep checking to if more listings pop up. More will start showing up later on in the season. Alot of people get rid of their bikes at the end or beginning of the season. Good luck on your search man!
