YES ITS ILLEGAL IN ALMOST EVERY 50 STATES.
YOU HAVE TO MOUNT IT on front and the back.
like everybody said thats why they issued you TWO PLATES.
something is always there for something.
i was lucky that before the dealer put them on my front fender, i talked to the manager and he finally let me go without the front plate mounted on...but then he said its my own responsibility if i get caught or ticketed by the popo....

not true in oh and in mi you dont need to have the front even thos they give you 2 plats
About the only thing Michigan has going for them nowadays lol.

MD it doesn't matter............no front plate = ticket

yeah I know lol, i dont ahve mine on though, cause i dont feel like drilling the holes in the bumper, so i took mine out and ran over it a few times to make it look like it fell off. I always carry an extra $50 on me so that if i get pulled over and get the $50 ticket, i'll pay for it right then and there lol. A buddy of mine once paid the cop right when he got the ticket, but it was for $250 lol, but yeah...

Well if it's anything like WI if they give you two plates you have to use them both.

not all states require front plates, I can say Alabama and Georgia do not require front plates...

then again, they don't require front teeth either!!

when I lived in Florida, I didn't see a single car with front plates

I received a no front plate ticket last month, $201! I am going to court for mitigation tomorrow and hopefully the judge will drop it. By the way, I am in WA.

The RCW states your plate must be attached to the front of the car no more than 4 feet from the ground and the numbers have to be plainly visible. Also plate covers are illegal in WA. I wouldn't advice of having the plate inside your window, because if you get in an accident it will possibly decapitate you. Also if it is on the passenger's side, it is not plainly visible. If it is on the driver's side you can get a ticket for it obstructing your visibility.

If you are polite the officer and advise them that you have a front license plate bracket ordered but it's on national backorder, you can typically get off with a warning. Just my experience, but my friend has 3 cars, none w/ front plates (in MD) and that excuse has worked at least 3 times on each vehicle, and on one of them its been 5 times

I work for the Olympia Police Department, so I'm pretty saavy when it comes to traffic laws. :]

Yes, you must have a front plate MOUNTED on the front of your car. Putting it in your windshield doesn't cut it. I got pulled over once for having no front plate, even though it was plainly visable through the windshield. Luckily I knew the officer who pulled me over.

south carolina we dont have 2 plates just the rear, hell half the time ther are cars without plates at all. we dont even have vehicle inspections we stopped doing that either in 1995 or 1998 so now every junker can make every1 elses ride that much more uncomfotable

see its different here...we dont get stickers for our plates..its just the plates...and they could care less if its in the windshield cause its suppose to be mounted....sucks cause i had to watch them drill into my front bumper before it came off the lot...definitly hurt

Same here in NJ. They did away with stickers back in 2002 I believe. I remember the first day I got my plates I put the front one inside behind the windshield. Got pulled over that same day. Luckily, the cop was nice enough to help me put it on. But if he was an a$$hole, I would have gotten a ticket.

I heard a while ago the State of NJ is thinking of doing away with two license plates and sticking with just one.

Yeah, depends on where you're at. I know attorneys, judges, and even COPS them selves that drive around with no front plate. Plus I use to work at a parking lot, with I dealt with cars that didnt have plates all day. Not only by state, but also county.

Now, for the plates on the dashboard or front windshild, whatever it is, people here have been pulled over for THAT reason. "Oh, its on the outside of the car." Whatever.

I've been without plates since day one, nearly three years ago, and I finally got pulled over for it a couple of weeks ago. I ended up behind a cop in a turn lane, and he pulled into a shared turn lane, let me pass, then flipped on his lights.
He was a nice guy, told me what the deal was, and I just did my best to remain polite. Also noted my rear plate "bubble", which he said I should know is for display purposes only. Right he was.

Anyway, he let me off with a warning, and I still have yet to be cited for my tint (22%).
Also in Washington.
To be perfectly fair, though, the dealership drilled my holes lopsided. The one time I put the plate on at home, it looked absolutely ridiculous, and I took them right off. Like a DIY with no experience. I have painted bumper plugs (though one is half stripped to primer; don't know when or how that happened, but it's pretty subtle). Until I get a new bumper (lip is cracked in half from accidentally hitting a cat that darted out in front of me some years ago), I'm stuck with this garbage. Looking into an '08 bumper; much cleaner looking. Still not wearing a plate.

Just so everyone here knows...the current Washington State RCW states that one must legally have a plate on the front of their car IF the dealer drilled holes.

If there are no mount holes in the bumper then there is no requirement for a front plate. I've been without a front plate on most of my cars for half a dozen years and have never been cited when being pulled over because of the loophole.

Here's the code btw (http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=46.16.240):

RCW 46.16.240
Attachment of plates to vehicles — Violations enumerated.

The vehicle license number plates shall be attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle for which the same are issued and in such a manner that they can be plainly seen and read at all times. However, if only one license number plate is legally issued for any vehicle such plate shall be conspicuously attached to the rear of such vehicle. Each vehicle license number plate shall be placed or hung in a horizontal position at a distance of not more than four feet from the ground and shall be kept clean so as to be plainly seen and read at all times. In cases where the body construction of the vehicle is such that compliance with this section is impossible, permission to deviate therefrom may be granted by the state patrol. It shall be unlawful to display upon the front or rear of any vehicle, vehicle license number plate or plates other than those furnished by the director for such vehicle or to display upon any vehicle any vehicle license number plate or plates which have been in any manner changed, altered, disfigured or have become illegible. License plate frames may be used on vehicle license number plates only if the frames do not obscure license tabs or identifying letters or numbers on the plates and the plates can be plainly seen and read at all times. It is unlawful to use any holders, frames, or any materials that in any manner change, alter, or make the vehicle license number plates illegible. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle unless there shall be displayed thereon valid vehicle license number plates attached as herein provided.

ALSO according to IRLJ 6.2 (the current base fee structure for violations in WA state) there is no fine associated with not having a front plate under 46.16.240...only if you use someone else's plates, loan yours out to someone else, have an expired vehicle license (tabs), or alter your plates in any way can a state fine be associated with it.
