ok guys, so i'm kinda in a small dilema...i'm about to buy a cold air intake for my girl's 3 series off of ebay, and i can't make up my mind on whether i want to splurge the extra money and have them throw in a k&n fileter....the difference is about 15 bucks...in my past intakes maybe on two occasions i threw in a k&n and i think it made a difference...could of been my existing filter was old, withered or just plain dirty but when i added the k&n i felt a little extra spunk...then i started reading all these different threads and blogs about all intakes being the same with the difference being 1hp at most...do you guys think there's any validility to this, or is it all just mumbo jumbo...i've been running an ebay intake, switching from a weapon r v2 here and there and my car feels great, what do you guys think, keep in mind i don't want to spend the extra money for 1 hp, just not worth it for a car that rarely hits over 5000rpms..

K&N was the company that started it all with "high flow" cotton fiber filters. Generic knocks offs are pretty much the same (injen), but not 100%. Honestly, just don't get a Spectre from Autozone and think it's the same. Go with AEM dry flow/K&N/Injen.....those are all good.

dude, its a bimmer. it don't need no intake. unless you just want to be able to say it has one...save your money.

probably get the same results with a K&N drop in .

Yeah, the drop in might be a nice way to go.

lol...just so it's cleared up and in the air...tell us about your bad experience with these so-called "spectre" filters...? K&N is defenitely the ones who started it all..

Spectre are not cotton fibers although they feel like them. They are a fiber like material that is more paper than anything else. You're honestly better off spending the extra 15$ knowing it's the real deal, but in this case, a drop in might be more resonable.

I used to work at Autozone and those filters were just crap. But all the Honddduuuhhh boys loved them...haha......just like they loved their front mount "intercooler"...i.e. air filter.

K&N makes the best filters, 15 bucks for the drop in filter can't hurt at all.

actually 15 bucks was the extra amount i was going to pay to have them send me a k&n with a cold air package..but now i'm thinking about the k&n drop-in...cost about 48 bucks at autozone..i really wanted a cold air for the car, it has some awesome torque, just wanted a little more zoop zoop...so what's the verdict, cold air or drop-in?..i actually talked to a guy at the dealer where i bought my car and he said he threw the k&n drop-in into his tc and he loves it, he said he get's the suction noise out of it as well as a little better performance...

You can't go wrong with the K&N drop in or the CAI with the K&N.
well unless the actual CAI is generic...

wow that was more intense than that one time I forgot how to sit down...

Over all I think the K&N CAI would be better then just a drop in.

personally i think those ebay special generic intakes suck... had one before on my 06 corolla S ... i think your better off with just the K&N drop in... cheaper and easier... prolly just as much performance

Sorry to threadjack but you had a Corolla S? The ones with the GTS motor and 6spd? how was it? I've never seen any of those on the road (or maybe I have, but they all look the same )

so i ordered the k&n drop in...comes in today...cost about 48 bucks at autozone but it also comes with a lifetime warranty...i already have a bunch of different recharger kits so all i have to do is keep it clean and it'll go vrooooooom...alright, i don't know if i believe these guys but i've already talked to two different people that have a k&n drop in and they said it sounds like they have an intake...now i really don't care about the intake noise as much as i do about any power gains if any...better than losing though off cheap oem filters...so we'll see, i'll keep it posted, although i don't think anyone one here is interested in a k&n drop in for their tc..lol

i have a k&n drop in as the filter for my custom GF-CAI. my intake system does sound pretty good imo for a non-aftermarket, basically modified-stock NA intake system.

i would STRONGLY recommend cutting out the charcoal/paper secondary filter element (in the top of the air box) at the same time, then remove the silencer box (weird shaped black reservoir looking thingy in the intake tract after the MAF. Plug the hole with a 1.5 or 2" ( i forget, sorry!) rubber plumbing cap from Home Depot.

Then you will be very satisified with your intake sound i think.

if you want a bit more power, then follow Doc I's or my GFI system. I'll take pics of the whole thing this weekend. I love the way my car pulls.

i kind of have a similar set-up with my tc intake in the sense of how i run my ram, it's a short ram with a few extensions here and there..i feel a throatier sound and pull with the ram, just got to make sure you're catching good air, but yeah i'm def. gonna try it, thanx...

so a k and n drop in can help the performance of your car?

Very slightly, but it's more for economy/gas mileage. In high output engines, it'll show a slightly better increase due to their already higher intake suction and A/F requirement.
