Hey guys. Since I'm moving off of GD to ImageMagick for image manipulation, I am able to do a lot of cool things with images with ease. I want to get your take on watermarking the images you guys upload with your personal username / address.

Any medium sized images that are uploaded and displayed to the site would have a slightly transparent text with your username and the site in the corner. This text would be something like "SqMK.clubsciontc.com", or, for your personal ride alias, "myride.SqMK.clubsciontc.com" for any images uploaded to a specific ride of yours. Anyone who downloads your image and posts the image on another site will ultimately be advertising your profile page, possibly scoring you votes or comments from visitors.

Also, I'd be creating another size image that is much larger than the norm for higher res viewing (something like 1027x768, ratios maintained if beyond width or height). This larger image would also have a slightly larger watermark in the corner.

What do you guys think? I could create a concept of this and post it in here, and if you guys like it, I can create a new batch of images with the marking. Of course, I keep the originals so that in the future, if we DO make changes, I can easily create thumbs, medium size images, and larger images with branding.

Watermarking would be a GREAT idea. There's been a few instances on SL where some people's pics have been "stolen" and used for ebay photos. Something right in the middle just nice and light would be perfect.

Here is a basic example of something I have working upon resizing images:

The font size, color, style will probably change, and a small logo might appear to the right of the image. If anyone has any opinions / ideas for this, let me know.

Well, putting things in the corners or edges of pictures can easily be taken off..........just open it in Paint and trim the edges off............something in the middle just really faint would be a lot harder to clear up. I would say have a "clubsciontc.com" watermark in the middle and have some sort of variable attached to each user that when they post, it acknowledges that it is them and posts their User name in the corner......the watermark will stay even if the name is removed.

Think that could be possible?

So you want an additional watermark in the center that is extremely faint? I'd like to keep at least the user name / logo in either the lower left / right corner as to not meddle so much with the center of the image, but something faint / subtle in the center with 'clubsciontc.com' could work.

Well, I'm just concerned about how easy it is to crop a picture and get rid of a water mark in the corners or on the edges. But, if one in the middle would corrupt the image, then lets just keep on on the bottom somewhere (or where ever you were going to put it). Maybe have it with the color scheme of the new 3.0 site....if it's going to be different.

I have plans on implementing some of the 3.0 stuff on the 2.0 site just for testing purposes. This watermarking stuff and the xxx.xxx.clubsciontc.com links would go into 2.0 (maybe tonight?) for benchmarking.

It's a good idea, I had a image that was taken off my cardomain page and someone here used it as an avatar

It would be cool if someone tried to link to the pic, it would have display a big fat hairy guy

This can be done. I might prevent people from hot linking the thumbnails / original photos, but allow for using the medium sized images with the user name branding on it; they'd have to be on this site to view the original
