I found this through some research online. It came directly from the Scion maintenance manual that costs 180$ from when I called the number in the back of our manual. I might get the manual though. It's very useful b/c it shows all the dealer tech tricks.

Page 1: Incase you drain the fluid from your master cylinder (be very mindful of this b/c it's just a lot more extra work)

Page 2: Standard brake bleeding. I use a technique similar to this but doesn't require repeated pedal depression. Both will work except this you will need 2 people and mine is only 1 person.

My technique from a previous post...

Bleeding the brakes is done the same way as you would any other car, according to the maintenance guide for the 2005 tC.

After lifting car, setting on jacks and all that...:
START FROM THE FURTHEST TIRE FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER (BACK PASSENGER SIDE)

GO IN THIS MOTION:
1)back passenger
2)back driver
3)front passenger
4)front driver

This allows you to get the longer rear lines filled with fluid first so that no air may get trapped while bleeding the front shorter lines.

Now the steps:
1)Turn bleeder screw so that you get some fluid coming out.
2)get a clear plastic tube and a small water bottle or mason jar and fill it 1/2 way with brake fluid

3)attach one end of the clear tube to the brake bleeder and leave the other end fully submerged into the brake fluid

4)have someone (or you do it) continually make sure the master cylinder is up to the proper level of fluid (this keeps air out of the lines and it's more of a pain to bleed the master cylinder if you get air in that)
5)after checking the master cylinder level and making sure the plastic tube is attached firmly and the other end is submerged, pump the brake pedal while watching the little bottle (use your hand on the brake and keep your head under the car)

-you will see air bubbles in the bottle coming out
6)after 2-3 full depressions of the pedal, add more fluid to the master cylinder to keep it level
7)when the bubbles stop and clear fluid is just coming out, tighten the brake bleed back and remove the clear tube.
-fluid will be much darker in the bottle b/c it's the old fluid coming out of the lines.....just watch the clear tube until no air comes out and it's clear fluid coming out
Move to next caliper and repeat steps 3-7 (empty out the old fluid from the little bottle and fill it with more clean fluid)

No laughing at me. This is the best I could do for a quick DIY in Paint.

question: I am not going to bleed brakes to get air out, I'm replacing the old fluid. Do I have to drain out all the old fluid first or can I just bleed the brakes -> fill the resvoir -> bleed -> fill -> bleed -> fill? And if I do that, how will I know when all the old fluid is out of that particular line and was replaced by the new one, how do i know to go on to the next caliper?

[edit] also does anyone know how much fluid I need to buy?[/edit]

Bleed & fill. It's hard to tell when all the old fluid is out because there's a lot of fluid. In the lines too, not just the resovoir.

Usually, you can tell by the color of the fluid, but sometimes it all looks the same. Either 1 large bottle of fluid (I think it's a 1-2 quart jug, or 2-3 little pints should be plenty.

If i remember right... eh dont get brake fluid on your paint, it will strip it... if you do, wipe it off right away
