I know a lot of you are pretty technology savy and probably already know what a CVT is, thanks mostly to Nissan pushing the technology along further, but many of you including myself, had no idea what a CVT is, well here you are: CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission uses a belt driven pulley with cones or wheels that change proximity to offer infinite gear ratios. In short, a CVT does not shift gears at all. You just get continuous power and transmission grip. ![]() Pictured above is a CVT from the Nissan Versa. The technology isn't new at all. The first CVT was actually drawn up by Leonardo da Vinci. The first patent for the device was in 1886 and companies such as Subaru, Ford and Dodge have used CVT's. The problem with previous model CVT's is they used rubber belts for the transmission pulleys, this meant the transmission belts would stretch snap and break and the horsepower was limited. Nissan perfected the CVT in their Murano made in Japan and later sold in the states. Nissan uses a steel belt that looks like a zipper instead of rubber belts. The benefits to CVT is better fuel economy, smooth driving because of no shift shock and continuous power that makes the best use of the engine's powerband. The best use of the CVT can be felt in the 2007 Nissan Maxima which has been sport tuned to make the throttle much better than the sluggish Murano. Another benefit means no fluids to change. The CVT uses a gel that under normal daily driving, never needs to be replaced. If you're a lead foot, Nissan can service the gel around 60,000 miles. I was reading up on this a few months back. It makes you wonder what they will think of next. |

I don't know. Even in an automatic, I would still need to feel the shift point or at least hear it. Not a big fan of this trany. ![]() Complaining is futile when you supported the victory. http://clubsciontc.com/fo...-rims--5x100-pattern.html |

I got into the 07 Maxima and punched it. The transmission climbs to near redline and stays there until you let off or until your speed cuts off. I enjoyed it but it's not ideal for the track, mainly because your engine speeds are being 100% computer controlled. |

idk about the longevity of CVT trannys.. The CVTs that came out for the Honda HXs a few years back were HORRIBLE.. I've had friends replacing their trannies every 5k-10k miles ![]() ![]() ![]() The Thread Killah |

Nissan's CVT are designed to last the life of the engine. It's been improved by having a metal band belt that looks like a zipper. |

I pretty sure the Toyota Prius has the transmission too. I drove my dad's Prius before I got my tC and one thing I've noticed is that you dont feel like you are accelerating with CVT. Still, the technology is pretty cool. ![]() "gonna wash my car before i take a nap.. can't rest well knowing i've got the entire cast of A Bug's Life on my bumper" - Vicious -- Want to post a "For Sale" thread?
