Are the new class D amplifiers really good enough to serve as full range amps in a high end system?

I had read for years that class d amplifiers were very efficient, very small for the amount of power they put out, and produced very little heat. All of these traits were due to the power transistors being either on or off, the down side was noise or distortion caused by the transistors switching on and off. This limited the amps to being used only as bass amps, and then not even considered good in a high end system.

I see that quite a few high end car audio manufactureres are now offering class D amplfiers not only as sub amps but also as full range amps.

I know elctronics is a constantly advancing field but i would like to know how the companies overcame noise problem with these amps, and has anyone actually listened to them and compared them to a class AB amp.

That's a new one on me. I know that class D amps are still used for lower frequencies, but I've never heard of them being used for higher frequencies. The only way I can think of to do it would be to include a seperate amp with a,b, or ab transistors on the same physical hunk-o-metal(amp).
