Kenwood DDX 7015 keeps poping the 20am under the hood?

I am new to these forums and do not even own a scion. One of my friends does and he is a user on here his username is BLACKSAND. I am trying to help him get his radio stuff in order and its not going so well. He had the DDX 7015 installed and it looks great and what not but it keeps blowing the 20 amp fuse for the radio under the hood. We took it back to the installer who did the job and they gave him a brand new radio about 2 weeks later. I didnt think that it was the radio causing the issue but i was not there that day and my boy does not know that much about radios and stuff and just let them make the swap. Never the less a few hours later he blew another fuse. Now this whole fuse thing has been going on for over a month now. We have taken the car in like 3 times already and the installer went over all of the wiring and said everything seems fine. Please note that the installer did use the toyota wire harness that you buy seperate so that none of the stock wiring has to be hacked up. We just went back for the 4th time last week and the installer said he was just going to run a new power direct from the ignition to totally bypass the stock power wiring and what not. It seemed like he did run the new line off of a 12 switched becuse now when the car is turned off all of the setting are lost. I know this is not a good installation but i give the guy credit for trying.Well you guessed it the fuse under the hood still blew out and the radio shut off again. Now i am really at a complete loss here:If the guy did run a brand new line from the ignition how could the fuse still go? How can that fuse be still connected to the radio if there is a dedicated line? Do you think he lied about the line? Has anyone else had any problems with fuses using this radio? My boy did start a thread about this some time ago and did not recieve any feed back from anyone.http://www.clubsciontc.co...pic&t=4187Granted he did replay and thought everything was all good but it was not. Do you guys think my boy is just unlucky and had some bad wiring from the dealer? Any help on this matter will be greatley appreciated.FYI: the radio was bought and installed at 6th ave electronics in New Jersey right off route 4 in paramus. The guys that work there are nice ppl and didnt give us any hassle about any of this and have been trying to work with us. It seems like i may have to take it to a diffrent location and then have to bill 6th ave for the new charges that my boy will need to pay. Thanks in advance for any help from anyone40 veiws and no help? Anyother scion sites i can post this on??

First, please, quit referring to him as -your boy-. Is he your son? Doubt it... Ghetto slang makes my eyes hurt. Anyway...1: Reinstall the stock headunit (you don-t have to replace it in the dash, just plug it in). See if the stock headunit blows the fuse. If the fuse doesn-t blow, then the headunit is faulty. If the fuse blows, then it-s shorting out somewhere, and the harness needs to be rechecked, along with the wiring going up to it. 2:Short circuit = 0 Ohms to ground from memory lead / Granted this may not work on every single situation but a good simple method for tracing the short for me would be an Ohm meter.3:Another good method is to place a small wattage bulb in place of the fuse that is blowing, as long as the short is present bulb will glow at full brightness. Remove the short and bulb will go out complete or dim.

Another option, ifthose don-t work, I have more ways, but if you insist on posting elsewhere, a few places are scionlife.com, elitecaraudio.com, caraudioforums.com

Thanks pop corn. The radio in question is actually the second unit that we have had in there now with the same results. The stock unit was in there for around 2 months before he had the new radio put in and never had a problem. Ill print this out for the installer and let him know that something has to be wrong in the wiring and hes gonna need to pull it out and cheack it all over again. So since this is the second unit that we have had installed in the car you also think its faulty wiring? That was the first thing i thought it was that something was not wired correct and is grounding out somewhere but he said the wires were fine. Next time im going to hjave him replace the wire kit with a new one and hope for the best. Thanks for your help with this matter. I will update this post as soon as we go see the installer again. Ironically enough the slang makes your eyes hurt yet your screen name comes from a gheto movie.

Well, in highschool (conveniently when I got on the whole message board thing about 5 years ago) all of my friends (which, happened to be ghetto, and or of mixed ethnicity) called me a player. That-s the only thing I could come up with that was kind of similar. Anyway, get him to stick the stock unit back in there first to see if the fuse is still popping. If it does, then it-s the wiring, if it doesn-t, it-s the unit. I-d bet 9 times out of 10 though it-s one of a few things, loose/faulty connection, bad wire (ie a spot in the wire has become naked and is shorting out) or something similar. Two units aren-t going to be lemons. The installer probably did a crap shoot, and hoped it was the unit. I seriously doubt he rechecked the wires when he pulled the unit out, and really, to be honest, he probably just told your frioend that he swapped the unit. If the problem persists, I-d take it to a more reputable dealer (try to find someone that has all certified people in the shop (MECP certification) and get them to repair the error then bill the original shop.) Tell the original shop your plan to do this. If they don-t fix it, you-d have to take them to court to get the money, but you-d get it eventually. Other than that, take out ads in the local newspaper describing your problem. An unhappy, and unruly customer is bad for their business. They-ll fix it a lot faster.

Yeah you are probably right. The next time i speak to the installer im going to let him know that this will be the last chance to get it right or i will need to go to another installer and they will have to flip the bill on it. If not then i will have to take his ass to court. I hate going to court but i will do it if need be. It wont be the first time i represent my self in a court of law. I have not lost yet :>Thanks for the info playa :>I will let you know how things go.

Common mistakes for people who install head units is leaving the orange/white, And Orange wires untaped. or uncovered. these wires both see voltage changes and will blow the fuse leading to your turn on power And or the lighting source. the kenwood unit shouldn-t draw more than 10-12amps PEAK. As for tv-s need very little and the only thing really draining power is the amp. So if you-re having a lighting issue also, I-d check that. OTherwise. I-d put my culprit into the power wire grounding out at some point. SEe what kind of connections they use and make sure nothing is getting pinched.

That-s exactly whyI cut the orange (dimmer) wires out of the harness.
