whats the best way to clean the engine bay and all the visual engine components. is the only way to clean it is to wipe things down? ive never cleaned an engine before, so what ive been doing is just wiping things down, but its lengthy and doesnt get everything clean all the time. thanks for the help.

i believe you can take it somwhere and they will steam it for you, all the crap should slip through the cracks.i think thats how its done, meant to do it to my 4runner but got busy and forgot about it, not a bad idea though

take a plastic grocery bag or something and cover the alternator securely and just hose the compartment down. Worked fine for me.

My dad has a pressure washer, that I used on my old MR2. just cover the ignition componts and blast away. Worked great on years of grime, probably overkill on a newer car.

Well I didn-t cover up anything and just hosed it down. Everything is cool and using a pressure washer is key for getting off that grime. If you wanna be safe you can cover up the alternator and ignition system but I don-t think it-s that big of a deal. It-s not like the car will stop working or anything lol.

Anyone care to show a picture of where the alternator and ignition system are? I see the alternator, but others might not know. As for the ignition... well, I-m new to this whole thing.

Actually it will... if the ignitor gets wet the car won-t start until it dries. trust me on this one But... the tC is coil over direct ignition so you shouldn-t have this problem.

So, if you don-t plan on going anywhere for a few hours, go ahead and hose it down without covering anything?

See what I did was I hosed it down, started the car and let the engine heat up so the water would slowly dry out. If you would like to drive it around, I guess it wouldn-t be a problem but I never knew someone who physically cleaned their car and drove it right after, so I would just let the car run and let it dry.

I use gunk engine degreaser first you spray it let it sit then spray it off. It gets the majority of the gunk out except a few tight places. Then you can get the rest of it with a toothbrush. after that dries let the car run for like 20 min. so the engine gets nice and hot, then spray CDF(sp?) engine detailer on it and let it sit for another twenty min then drive the car somewhat hard so that the engine get real hot, obvously avoid dirt roads and water. Then after a day wipe it down and viola the cleanest engine bay ever!! LOL seriously this stuff is the best. It forms a coating on the engine and doesnt let dirt or grease stick near as easy. So each time you do it, it is easier and easier. I do it once a month on the wifes tc and on my WRX.Heres a pic of hers after almost 4000 miles:

I wishi had my camera, my ngine bay is as clean if not cleaner than yours Greddy, and ihave 14k miles...hehe...I find it ez to just everytime u was ur car, take the Armoral Wipes (the purple tube preferred) and just start wiping away, hitting every detail/cap/cover. And when it cools down, u can wipe down the heat shield as well. For the heavy gunk (which i have NONE yet, because i don-t drive in nasty ass areas) I use the Engine Degreaser, then the Engine SHine Foam... cover all electronics though.

I do use turtlewax 2000 on it when there are just some spots but there are places that you simple cant get to with your hands. my WRX has 69K and its this clean so it works fine. The engine detailer is great just for the simple fact it keeps dirt off where as armorall attracts dirt but it does look great until you drive for a while.
