Here are some videos that I took of a diagnostic test that I performed last night. This was prompted by Crestmont Toyota on Rt. 23 telling me that there is nothing wrong with my tranny. I "test" drove one of their 2008 tC's for a comparison with my own.

The first 2 videos are in the new car and the 3rd and 4th are in mine.

IMO, this is warranty work and regardless of what is broken or how it is diagnosed, the fact that these 2 E351 trannies don't behave the same way tells me that something is wrong in one of them. Am I wrong?

Please refrain from bashing the dealer or posting anything questionable on this thread, afterall, what I really want here is their help in fixing or replacing this problem.

whats with the putting it in 5th? ive never heard of anyone doing that after revving it and just putting the clutch in. so obviously when you put the clutch in, you let off the gas otherwise the rpms would have shot up. so you got off the gas, put the clutch in, put it into 5th and that was it?

to me it just sounds like your grinding the gear, especially when you say it started when you shifted fast into 5th

but i would take the car to the dealer and have a tech sit in the car and do what you did in the video so he see's and hears the problem

I did that .... they told me that the tranny would be replaced, but it had to be verified by their master tech, so I left it with them for 2 days. They said that the master tech and quality control manager drove it for 15 miles and found no problem ..... they completely disregarded my notes, test procedure and the fact that it only happens intermittently on fast shifts. My guess is that they drove it like a grandma and said it's fine.

It is like grinding a gear, but the gear is never engaged. I was parked doing this and the tranny never left neutral. It went from lever neutral to clutch in neutral, trying to put the shifter over 5th gear.

That sounds like synchros to me. You should still be able to put the selector in the higher gear slot without a grind if the synchros are aligned.

You're right, that's not normal at all. I have a slight grind moving into 5th at times during normal driving. It happens more often depending on how I move my shifter.

I would have to agree with Web and say it's the synchros

Aaahhh! That sound makes me cringe! Stop it!!! But seriously, never even thought of doing that with my car. How did you find out you had this problem?

I agree 100% on the synchros .... the problem is that Toyota has to make that diagnosis so they fix it. I'm going to try to get some videos during the day so you can actually see what's going on better. Also, I'd like to capture the fast 4 to 5 shift that causes the issue .... for that I need to get up to about 4000 rpms in 4th, so about 70. If I go to S. NJ tomorrow, I'll be able to do it on the Tpke. or GSP.

Update: I forwarded yesterday's email along with a note to the dealership's GM. We'll see if anything happens now. If not, next stop is corporate, but I'm going through the steps to try to avoid unnecessary problems. After all, this dealership is the closest one to my house .... I'd prefer they do the work and not hurt my car or mess with it like Kurisutaira's oil change series.

They should go on a drive with YOU in the car as well. If they don't give you that option, they are trying to scam you. We did it all the time for BMW/Audi/Porsche customers and the techs preferred us (service writers) to suggest that to the customers. That way, there's no confusion in diagnosis. If it doesn't happen when YOU drive it, they can then say that it's not something to worry about. If they hear it WITH you in the car, then they can help you out.

I've got 83700 miles on mine and I tried this as well. Mine was quiet and engaged 5th smoothly. I'd say it's the synchro for 4th to 5th that is not aligned while shifting.

more videos. I spoke to the service manager this morning. He was out sick for the past 6 days, but he's setting up an appointment for the corporate regional tech to drive it with me.

Video #5 - my 2006 tC - 4 to 5 shift, audible grind

Video #6 - my 2006 tC - slow 4 to 5 shift, no grind. Then 3,4,5 with grind.

Video #7 - my 2006 tC - 4 to 5 shift at 75 mph, audible grind.
