Signature Crackdown v0.1: Tattletale!

 Hey friends,

Everyday I am seeing larger signatures, and this is making me sad. Some users are using images that are very large in filesize, and this really does slow down viewing experience for some users on slow internet connections. Imagine loading a thread where everyone has a 1mb image in their signature; it can be very slow! Also, some users are using images with a very long height, or extending their signature crazily with a ton of different images. I'd like to see very slim lined signatures.

Right now, I am cracking down on signatures with tons of images or very large filesized images (usually animations). If I see them, I will most likely clear out your signature with a message saying the sig is too large.


Here is a list of what I don't want to see in your sigs:
- Very large in height images. If your signature is larger than most of your posts, your signature is probably too big.
- Animations that are extremely large in filesize.
- Numerous medium size images in signature. Please limit to one or two images if you can.

What I plan to do shortly after the new forum launch to combat against nasty signatures (Signature Crackdown v1.0):

I will develop an automated process that determines the signature height, and the file sizes used in the signature. The process will run every night or every 12 hours. If the signature weighs in more than 60kbish or something, the signature will be deactivated (but not deleted, I can't preserve signatures in the older forum system) and you will be given a Warning or a Citation (coming soon!). There will also be a tool to preview your signature, and test it against a template.


If you notice any users with any images that weigh in over, lets say 40kb, please post their username here. If you see any signatures with an animated gifs that weigh in over 40kbish, please post their username here.

Combination; both pixel size and kb limit. Right now it's just an honor system in hopes that everyone will be lenient when it comes to signatures

Those of you looking to create new signature sizes of a normal banner size can use the formula I use.

anything taller than 100 pixels is too much.

all signatures I create are 525 x 100 or smaller.

This is good!

In the near future, signatures may be larger (width wise), as there will be more realestate in the layout to play with.

If the image shows an 'X', it means the image was deleted from the server you are loading it from, or the server hosting that image is down. We are not responsible for the 'X'ed out images.

If SqMK changes your signature, he'll add a note saying he changed it because it's too big.

You have nothing to worry about

Another thing to keep in mind with images is compression

a very compressed image can be the same size as an uncompressed

the main difference is a compressed formate just as .jpeg can have a much smaller file size than a lossless format such as .bmp even though the pixel size is the same.
