Replacement drive axles (tips/suggestions/recommendations)

Has anyone had to replace their front drive axles yet? I am doubting anyone has due to low mileage and time frame of vehicles on the site. But, incase someone has, any pointers?

My outer CV boots are showing signs (and feeling rough) of dryrot so I am going to be proactive on this matter. I saw PLENTY of BMWs come into the shop with split CV boots and grease flung ALL OVER the under side of the car and CV joints clicking. I DON'T want that to happen to me. I am going to get OEM quality axles (probably from Autozone) and replace them before the first snow fall. So, does anyone have any tips, suggestions as to where to order these axles if I can't find them at Autozone? Also, anyone know of a site selling specific axles for the tC that are upgraded? I am mainly looking for a neoprene CV boot assembly, setup rather than just a rubber boot, to prolong deterioration and dryrot.

From the driveshaftshop...

http://www.driveshaftshop.com/pdetail.php?pid=58

1200$....way too much for my needs and desire.

for now this will be only type set we will be making for this platform

TRDsparks.com

Driver's: (manual tC): 350$
Passengers: 410$

A bit more reasonable but still kind of pricey

Checking with a local dealer around here to see if they have govt. employee discounts or I'll try to get a friend of mine to order them since he still works for BMW....get a dealer discount.

Contact ptunning.com they have done 3 different upgrades to their axles for their race car. Each one being more extreme than the one before. I am sure they can point you in the right direction as to where to get a streetable version.
Not sure how cost effective or needed it will be, but its an option.

Emailed the local dealer near me today to see what their prices are but haven't received any feedback yet.

Nick, thanks...I'll see if they have something. I just really want an OEM or SLIGHTLY stronger replacement, but mainly, something that has a silicone or neoprene boot instead of rubber. I don't want to deal with any more dry rot.

When you check, you will probably have to contact them, either on Scionlife or through their site. I dont think it is something they sell.

(post up what they have once you find out)

Damn, I'm debating now whether to replace both axles completely or just replace the outer boots . I've been watching several DIY videos for random vehicles on how to do the boot kits, and remember some of the steps from watching the techs at BMW do them (common problem with BMW X5 SUV by the way), and it doesn't seem all that bad. I don't have a table vice, which kind of sucks so I may have to have someone help me after I remove the axle to take the joint apart.

I can get the boot kit for each side for about 30$ each and save some money up so later, maybe about another 50K down the road (if the joint holds up that long), I can buy the new axles.

Damn....I'm torn now. I know it's about the same time, but in all actuality it saves a bit doing the whole half shaft....I am just wondering if it's worth spending the money now and going with the OEM ones from TRDSparks or just getting the boot kits and doing the outer joints.

If you do the whole replacement axle, do Napa or CarQuest. My car is lowered and I kept snapping AutoZone axles and Advanced Auto part axles just driving around, but so far my 1 Napa and 1 CarQuest axle are holding up rather well

I'm just debating whether or not to just go ahead and replace them both or just do the outer boots. I hear absolutely no clicking by manually tugging on the joints and while driving. The boots are still sealed but just dry rotted so no grease leak or outside water/debris contamination has entered the boot.

For the time/work it takes to do the boot, I might as well just get 2 new axles....but, to save a bit of money now and buy better ones later, I can just do the boots.

TOOOOOORRRRRRRNNNNNN!!!!

Hmmmm...another option I have is this:

Buy both new axle assemblies and also buy inner and outer boot kits. Install the new axles on the vehicle and replace the boots on the old ones but thoroughly clean all the joints out. This way, I can take my time on cleaning the joints and making sure it's done properly and still be able to drive my car. .......................that sounds pretty enticing. Gonna have to think about this for a bit.

Just brushed on some 80w/90 gear lube onto the outer boots to lube them up and help the rubber be a bit more elastic. Trick I was told by a tech last night. The inner boots are still nice and soft but I think I'm going to get the whole new axles from TRDSparks.

Mike from Ptuning emailed me and was very straight forward (which I appreciated) and he said that if I'm not racing the tC, just get OEM axles. He also said to stay away from Autozone/Advanced for them due to lack of quality. Someone else above said this as well so that scratches that idea.

I'm pretty much set on just getting the ones from TRDSparks (since they are the cheapest) and replacing them both. Then, I can keep the old ones, disassemble them, clean the joints out thoroughly without having to rush to put them back on the car, and then replacing the boots. I can then coat the boots with a thin layer of gear lube to keep the rubber supple, and zip tie a back around each end to keep the air out as much as possible. Basement storage for a rainy day

OEM does sound the best.

I am glad Ptunning got back to you. They have to be one of the best shops around. Their timeattck car is amazing!! And the guys at the shop helped me with anything I ever needed. They arent cheap, but you get your moneys worth!!!

Since I lubed the boots with gear lube, they seem to be a bit softer now and a little more flexible. This gives me a bit of relief b/c now I can probably hold off on new axles for a few months. It's going to suck doing them when it's really cold out but oh well...that's what the little ceramic heater is for
