I have a question. I just purchased the sirius radio, and I want to hard wire it to the cigarette lighter. Can I do that? Or will it burn up the wires? Someone please help.

Does anyone know? Like hardwire it behind the cig lighter and let the lighter part just be there. Like maybe if I cut off the part that plugs into the cig lighter and get butt connectors and plug them into the other connectors that goes into the back of the cig lighter. Or is there a fuse inside the part that plugs into the cig lighter? Anyone?

yeah u can wire the sirius unit to the lighter. just cut off the cig plug on the power wire and wire it to the back of the cig light harness. make sure you have the right polarity meaning that the 12v wire on the sirius unit goes to the 12v wire on the cig lighter. and the same for the groung wire. you will need a voltmeter to do this. otherwise you are just gonna be guessing the correct.

a little hint...the 12v wire is the one connected to the spring loaded tip of the cig. adapter plug.

by the way, before you do this make sure that the cig adapter is putting out 12v and not something different. xm units use this same type of adapter plug, but they have circuity inside the adapter that reduces the voltage to 5V to go to the xm units.

sirius has always used 12v in the past, but just doulbe check.

you dont need to worry about fusung this connection because the power supply to the lighter is already fused. if you want to be safe you can put a 5A fuse in the 12V line going to the sirius unit.

I can test all this with a multimeter? I test at the sirius connector for this or the other end where it plugs into the sirius radio?

yeah a digital multimeter is all you need. test at the connector where it goes into the sirius unit. you will probably need to stick a small piece of wire in the end of the plug for the positive connection, most probes will not fit in that small of a hole. the negative is the silver "barrel" part of the plug.

If you're hooking up to the cig lighter, you may have to up the fuse amp in the fuse box for the cig lighter. The sirius radio may require a 20 amp and the cig lighter is a 15. Try to locate something else that is a 20 amp (or matched to the radio amp) and that should work fine for a power wire.

Complaining is futile when you supported the victory.

How can I tell the amperage of the Sirius? Is there a manual for this stuff?

inside the adapter plug is a glass fuse that has the amp rating on the side. it is probably around 3-5 amps or less.

if your unit is 12v then that kit is a waste of $25. if it is a 5V kit then you can just wire to the circuit board inside the adapter plug.

i'll be off work a couple of days and will throw together a diy on this subject.

just buy one of the clip on lighter plugs and cut the clips off. Then wire it to the lighter and use the Sirius plug as is. Use Velcro Extreme to secure it all under the trim panels.

well that would be appretiated by more people than just me I am sure for the DIY. Cause just hanging the wire from cig lighter to where ever is like putting neons and seeing the tube. It just doesn't make since.
