There are a lot of different ways to clean the engine and when you look through the detailing section of forums you'll see this topic come up (they are old threads, but the info is there)

The main thing to keep in mind is to make sure your engine is completely cooled.

You can use the engine cleaning spray & rinse sold at parts stores, or you can use the method I prefer... A nice soapy microfiber & luke warm water.

If your engine bay looks like it survived a nuclear fallout, it will be best for you to purchase a de-greasing foam/spray and rise.

To recap, do not put water on a hot bay and avoid the pressure washer.

My advice would be to use some soapy sponges while the engine is cool.

Every time you wash your car, just lift the hood and clean it with the drying rag that is a little damp. I don't use the chemical cleaners b/c they leave a nice shiny look, but that shiny residue attracts dust instantly. You'll have a dirty motor the next day. Just use a damp rag and take your time. Sadly, I've even resorted to q-tips near the block where the alternator sits. hahaha

Horrible for ignition coils...........plenty of cars at Audi and BMW (brand new and off the truck) were "steam cleaned" and all coils had to be replaced due to misfires.
