I'm deciding to stay the N/A route at least until i finish up my Degree. Maybe than afterwards, i will go the F/I route, but don't feel like going through the hassle while in school.

Questions are:

What kind of engine management would be suitable?

Will the stock ecu change back to stock after tuning?

I really don't care if the gains are minimal after tuning, at least i will know how much i am putting down and how my air/ fuel is.

Thanks guys.

well theres piggy-back ecu units that just attach directly onto ur stock ecu, then theres stand alones where u take out ur stock ecu and put in a new aftermarket one.
ive had a piggyback n/a once, when i had i/h/e/pulley. i could def feel a gain, but it wasnt a HUGE gain.

yea u can return to the stock ecu

some piggyback units are apexi-neo/apexi safcII, camcon
standalone n/a i know of is the unichip, other than that im not sure...

Thanks Rimjay. I was looking at the Apexi Neo for awhile now. I didn't know if it would be as beneficial as a standalone would be. I appreciate that bro.

np bong...
i think the standalone is much more 'tuneable', but the unichip is $900-$1000 last time my friend got one. apexi neo is what like $250? but i suggest taking it to a shop to get it tuned. my friend owns a shop so i just took it there

You'd be better off with something like Emanage blue for piggyback tuning. Those OBDII controllers won't allow you to really tune your car. Just tweak some settings here and there.

Lol, bong. You're older Rimjay, wouldn't that make you my bong? Lmao

Thanks Andino. I have a guy that is selling his e-manage for 200. Guess all i need to buy is the harness?

lol i told u im not too good wit khmer bro hahah
but yea def buy the plug n play harness, i dont think youd wanna splice ur ecu wires
andinos right, toyota ecu's are known to undo all changes made by piggyback units, although i havent seen any proof as of yet

So, should i go with the Apexi Neo, or a standalone like AEM EMS or E-Manage?

if you dont mind spendin more $ and doing it right, id go standalone. but the gains may not justify the price ur paying. especially if u only go i/h/e

For a meager 10-15 whp MAX, I would save your money and wait until you do a really big build on the engine. Granted, our engines even built but still NA will tune out to maybe a max of around 210-215 whp, that's still fun to play with. But, I'd wait until you do bigger mods rather than wasting money on a tune now.

Complaining is futile when you supported the victory.

^^That's why me emanage ultimate has been sitting in a box on my shelf for the last year, lol. Sure it would be nice to squeek a few extra ponies out of the engine, but for the cost it really isn't worth it unless you have cheap dyno access and don't have to pay someone to do the tuning. And once/if you start building the engine, you'll just have to do the tuning all over again.

If you're going to do it though, the emanage blue is the most cost effective piggyback to get. Look in the SL classifieds because they are advertised all the time. I think I saw an ultimate earlier this week for like 250. That's a steal if its still available.

did emanage blue find a way to keep the ecu from undoing all the changes made? i know sound performance were able to do it but were keeping it a secret

The ECU can't undo the changes made by a piggyback. What was being talked about above is an ODBII programmer. That makes changes to the cars ECU itself and ours will over write them because its too smart for its own good. A piggyback goes inbetween the ECU and the rest of the car and it alters the signal that the ECU send and not the computer itself. The ECU can't reprogram the piggyback because it doesn't know its there.

so our car is permanately tuneable with a piggyback?

The ECU sends a signal to the various components of the car to make them operate within specified parameters. A piggyback intercepts those signals and changes them based on how the unit has been tuned. So yes, it can tune it permanently and doesn't change it at the same time. Its like a middleman between the computer and the car. If you remove the piggyback the engine goes back to stock settings.

Well, the dyno and tuning is not the problem. My friends at blueridge allow me to dyno for 40 bucks, and the tuning, peice of cake. My cousin is certified in tuning, lol. So all i have to worry about is the computer itself.

I can get an AEM F/IC for 270, Deal or no deal?
