I was going to buy header wrap, at least that stuff would look good, but it's expensive.

I looked up information from Integra Forums and found a post from a guy that used specialized thick insulation for keeping ambient engine temps from soaking into the aluminum pipe.

I took Dr_Isotope's information on how the heat soak can throw off the IAT (intake air temperature sensor)on the intake. The IAT sensor reading hot temps can affect your ECU reading in a negative manner.

How do you deal with this? If you have an intake made from plastic you're not as affected by heat soak.

Intakes like Injen's aluminum pipe do not cool down fast enough and thus you have heat soak (which which will affect sensors)

Here is a cheap solution I completed 07/26/2008 at 4:00 pm.

^pipe insulation wrap $5 found at a home improvement store

^by far it's the ugliest thing I've done. Function first.

^the finished result (I've also cleaned the filter with a kit)

I don't know if I'll be able to tell the difference in terms of economy, ect, but after about 1 hour of continuous driving, the intake sensor area was skin temperature, which was a significant improvement over the very hot intake before this insulation.

i wish u lived close by orin i have access to stuff that culd make that look alot better.

with some patience u can make it look seamless and not wrinkled.

adhesive back foam tape insulation

Foil Tape (just aluminum foil with a sticky side)

Mastic Tape

If you did it with the foil tape you would have to have a lot of patience as it would give you the same effect it not done slowly.

Yeah it's hideous, lol.

And Kurisutaira I have the foam tape and the other stuff, but I went overkill by choosing a thicker insulator.

The foam tape does not have a reflective aluminum surface so it'll be exposed to constant engine bay heat that would break it down.

I considered the thinner foil tape, but it's too thin and I wanted the most thermal protection.

^an Integra owner's insulated intake.

here is the related article:
http://www.team-integra.n...Article.asp?ArticleID=410

It's not pretty, but it's functional.

Mainly I am experimenting, if it fails and I feel like going back to looks, this can be removed easily.

well the foam insulation i posted is wat we use for copper line sets that need to be tight so we can access valves. it will make a world of difference just do it in sections.
then use the foil tape and go over all the foam the same exact way u applied the insulation.
and lastly the mastic tape. apply it the same way as well.
the foam insulation will be your barrier, the foil tape will both protect the insulation and act as a surface the mastic tape can stick to. by the way the mastic tape also has a reflective surface coz oftenly we use it to patch duct work.
(we dont use the same mastic tape in the picture above)

this will require alot of attention if u want it to look good but so worth it. like i said if i was closer i'd do it for ya

I'm really not bothered by it looking less attractive. My car isn't a show car, it's just for me.

The suggestion is appreciated.

For the EXTREMELY minute results, I just dont see it worth it.
A cold air intake gets you like 3-5 hp max. And that is a major change in the intake restriction. The 1-2 degrees this might help you with is going to have no impact.

The only time i could see this being worth it, is if the car is tracked constantly. Not just 50 second autocrosses or the drag strip. But road courses that you are running for 30 minutes at a time. Engine bay temps are going to soar and heat soak will be insane, so then it would be worth it. But for daily driving, the engine bay temps arent going to be consistently high enough to make the heat soak bad.

^yep, I took that into consideration too, since I was already taking off the filter to clean it with the K&N cleaning kit I figure I'd give it a shot and monitor my MPG for the next month. (or two months)

There are other users on this site that have wrapped their intake in header wrap or used high temperature silicone coatings, all of which were beyond my budget for what I was willing to experiment with.

I spent $5 and achieved thermal insulation. Someone else my view this and see it's a good idea. If not, oh well.

When I get tired of this, I can remove this insulation with it's mild adhesive easily and the intake will be shiny and new looking again.

nice job...i might do that too on my SRI.

orin, dont mean to threadjack but, i have a cf hood, would putting something like that on the inside of my hood be a good idea? to keep the hood from heating too much?

There is another product that java09 put under his hood that will work a lot better. It looks like gold foil. I'd PM him about it.

I think it'd be a good idea, he has it mainly because of the heat from the turbo manifold.

Seems like it would help over a longer period of time exposed to heat but it's nothing that will work instantaneously. You wrap the intake pipe and immediately feel a rush is far from the truth...that's just for noobs that think doing this will give them a jolt in power. Depending on the climate (hot climates, like Georgia will benefit from this more), idling temperatures are much hotter as well as traffic. The more you sit in traffic, that intake pipe is simply absorbing and transferring heat to the sensors on the pipe. Keeping those sensors "relatively" moderated in temp is a good idea.

Yeah, it's not the best looking thing, but like you said....function before style.

Complaining is futile when you supported the victory.

removed all insulation

back to being a shiny pipe again. I discovered I lost 3 whp because I covered up the Injen Badge---J/K

Couldn't sense any benefit and it also seemed to hold heat for hours after the engine was turned off. Great for coffee, not what I wanted for my intake.

Header wrap may be a better choice for stopping heat soak.
