Scion recommends either 0w20 or 5w20. I would not recommend using 5w30 (*cough* Web haha). If you question which one is right for you then it depends on your environment. Also if your starting to change your own oil now be careful on what oil you choose. Synthetic is all I run but if you have been running conventional for over 20k then I HIGHLY recommend not using synthetic and sticking with conventional. Your engine does have memory in terms of oil and when changing formulas (e.g. weight of the oil or type in terms of conventional and synthetics). This has effects on gaskets / rings / bearing seals etc. Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. -Ben Franklin |

I didn't know that the 05-06 model years recommended 5w-30 so my bad. Yes, 0w-20 is better for cold climates. I had things backwards. Long day at work haha. Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. -Ben Franklin |

It's really your call. You will be safe with only 20k but I highly recommend using engine flush before switching to the synthetic. Check out Gunk Motor Flush. Just put it in your crankcase before your oil change. Run your engine for 5 mins then perform the oil change. This will allow your gaskets/seals to adjust to the new oil formula. Yup...flush it first then start fresh with synthetic. Your seals/gaskets will appreciate the gesture. ![]() Complaining is futile when you supported the victory. |

The reason they use such a thin oil, as Ford does, is for fuel economy. The only problem they don't tell people is that lower viscosity oil, while great for cold starts and fuel economy, burns up much faster and loses it's ability to hold pressure as well. 5W-30 is a bit thicker at operating temperature and is better for warmer climates compared to a xx-20 oil...even synthetic. Unless you live in Maine/Montana/Minnesota...etc...I'd use 5W-30 in an NA tC. Maybe in Arizona/New Mexico heat I'd up to a 5W-40. 4 cylinder, high revving engines produce so much heat so fast that thinner oil will boil/burn off much easier than a thicker operating viscosity oil. It all depends on your climate...I would NEVER take the manufacturer label as "law." It's informative since they DID build the car, but it's a generic recommendation. ![]() Complaining is futile when you supported the victory. |

no idea. im just following what toyota recommends...might have to do with the oil squiters in the 07 or one of the other minor engine changes ![]() The Skunk tC Fo shiggity my niggity |

so my understanding is use 5w30 if your climate is hotter for better heat protection or use 5w20 for not so hot temp climate, |

Not exactly true. They use something very similar to graphite called Moly. Moly has the same issues as graphite. As for the change in recommended oils, I think it has to do with the CR change .... they upped the CR to keep the HP the same with the new rating system, so I think they made the oil thinner to try to regain the associated MPG loss. |
