How To Wax Your Car Waxing your car does wonders to protect your car's surface from pollution and the elements. You don't have to wax every time you wash your car - a couple of times a year should suffice. If the finish begins to look a bit dull, or if water is no longer beading on the surface, then it's likely that a new wax job is in order. It's a good idea to apply wax right after you've washed your car. Applying wax over a dirty surface could cause scratches on the finish, so make certain that your car's body is as clean and dry as possible. Then follow the Expert's step-by-step advice and give your car the best protective coat possible. What you'll need: * Clean cotton towels (preferably terry cloth) * Clean water * Wax (clear-coat-safe only) * Polish (clear-coat-safe only) Step 1 - Apply polish Polishing before you apply a coat of wax will ensure a deeper sheen and is excellent for removing any small spots or scratches from the surface. If your car is a 1980-or-later model, the Expert recommends that you be certain to purchase products that are clear-coat safe. Ideally, you will have just washed your car, so it will be parked in a shady area. If not, be sure to move it to a spot away from direct sunlight - the heat will make it difficult to apply the wax after polishing. Apply the polish to your car in sections from top to bottom (roof, front and back hoods, right and left sides). The polish may come with an applicator, or you may use one of your cotton towels to apply it sparingly, using gentle, circular motions. Once you have completed a section, allow it about 10 minutes to dry, then use another clean towel to gently rub away the residue. Step 2 - Apply wax After you have applied polish to each section and removed the residue, it is time to perform the actual waxing. Apply the wax with another clean towel, using the same gentle, circular movements. Wait 10 minutes or until you notice a slight change in color on the coat of wax, then gently remove the residue. Step 3 - Buff As a finishing touch, take another clean towel and buff your car's newly waxed surface to a high shine. Rembeber Mister Miagi's Rule- wax on, wax off! Taken from: Castrol Waxing Tips and FIY's: * Today’s clear-coat finishes resist oxidation and the harmful effects of acid rain, but you should still wax your car 3-4 times a year. * Before waxing, you’ll want to start with a perfectly clean (figure A) and dry vehicle to prevent scratches and streaks. * A good wax job starts with a quality wax. * Some new formulas can even be applied in direct sunlight rather than shade. * Wax should be applied with a circular motion, doing small sections at a time. * A thin layer works best, so don’t lay it on too thick. * When finished, the wax will haze, and you can buff it to a high gloss with a micro fiber towel (figure B). * Try to rotate the cloth as you work, shaking out the residue. * For a deeper shine and extra protection, use multiple layers of wax. * You’ll know it’s time for a fresh coat when water no longer beads up * Scratches can be removed before waxing by using an abrasive cleaner that removes enough of the paint to make the scratch appear less deep. If scratches are deeper, you may need to use on orbital buffer or repaint the area. * Applying wax to a wet vehicle can create unfavorable streaks that will be difficult to remove. Make sure the car is completely dry before applying the first layer of wax. * When applying additional layers of wax, make sure yours does not contain cleaning agents. You could end up removing the first layer of wax while applying the second one. * Certain conditions, such as sunlight or shade, may affect the performance of the wax. Always consult the manufacturer’s instructions before applying any product to your car. * When wax hazes, it turns a white color and should feel dry to the touch. At this point, you should buff with a different cloth until you get a deep shine. Hope this is useful to you guys! Meguiar's NXT is great for cars with flakes. I personally use Meguiar's 3 step system haha. But that's just me. For Clay bar, I recommend the ICE Liquid Clay Bar system. But for hard to get things, go for the Meguiar's clay bar kit or the Mother's one. ![]() ![]() ![]() Are you in SoCal? Come to our CStC meets! Located in Socal? Need something Installed?
