I'm in the process of choosing a short shifter for my tc but i'm stuck between the Doc I and the K2 shifter. Which one is better quality and will give better performance? |

Doc I FTW. You can get a full preassembled cage from him that is built to withstand a lifetime of use. Just drop it in and send him your stock cage for the core charge. ............... ![]() ![]() ![]() Donate or one of these adorable kittens WILL DIE! |

I got K2, its decent. Kinda wish the throws were a little shorter though. Maybe its a good idea to go with Doc I. ![]() "gonna wash my car before i take a nap.. can't rest well knowing i've got the entire cast of A Bug's Life on my bumper" - Vicious -- Want to post a "For Sale" thread? so doc I has a shorter throw. sounds good. I was thinking maybe getting that with a 2.0 inch drop. Anyone have this setup? |

I don't have that setup, but I've seen it, and 2" is a good happy medium. Not too short that it makes shifting hard, but not so tall that it looks stock. ............... ![]() ![]() ![]() Donate or one of these adorable kittens WILL DIE! |

well, you can pretty much trust doc i vs. some off brand thing that i've only seen sold on ebay that and you can customize your gearswitcher to whatever dimensions you want pretty much. he's a great guy. how much of a drop is the k2 shifter? |

Only .5"....I didn't want drop, I wanted throw reduction. The throw is reduced quite a bit from stock and with the longer handle, you utilize leverage to engage the gears with a bit more ease. ![]() Ignorance is bliss....305 fo life!...haha...Poser |

true but the shorter lever looks better and makes for shorter throws because of the decreased radius. |

No, height has nothing to do with throw reduction. It's all in the pivot point of the shaft, not the height. Look at Doc I's extremely LONG shaft...hahaha....it's about 2 feet long and still a shift reduction. ![]() Ignorance is bliss....305 fo life!...haha...Poser |

no it actually does. And i know the short throws are based on the pivot point but in addition to that, the shorter the height from the pivot point to the top of the shaft the shorter the throws assuming that everything else is constant. Its simple physics, think of the length of the throws as the edge of a circle and think of the shaft height from the pivot point to the top of the shaft as the radius of the circle. The shorter the radius the shorter the arc length. |

Only loop hole in that is when you lengthen the overall length of the shaft, you change the bend as well. The longer the shaft, the more dramatic the bend towards the driver. That's how Mustangs are setup with their S-shaped shifter. The pivot is in the center and from that center, the shaft is bent towards the driver. You lengthen the arm (make it closer to the driver) and reduce the overall throw. ..from Dr. I's profile: ![]() Look at the extra S-bend he has right above the collar. With that extra bend, he has a shorter gear throw than even the TWM stage II shifter which is about 4.5 inches tall. ![]() Ignorance is bliss....305 fo life!...haha...Poser |

that just brings the shifter closer to you it doesn't actually reduce the distance of the throw from say 1st to 2nd. And who says theres a bend. I thought tc shifters are straight from the pivot point up. |

No, they have a certain degree bend. You'll see it when you take the boot housing off. There's a bend right at the top of the pivot collar, usually a bit off to the right and down. I would PM Dr. I, or maybe he can write a comment in this thread, to figure out the angles of reduction he uses....just at the pivot or at both the pivot and the shaft handle. ![]() Ignorance is bliss....305 fo life!...haha...Poser |

its ok i already ordered a shifter from doc i with a 2.0 inch drop i just wanted people to know that when you go for a shorter shaft heigh (given that the shifter is straight) you're basically trading leverage for slight shorter shift throw. |

^Gottcha......I can agree with that since it's the leverage that enhances the shorter feel. Without it, the throws take a bit more arm stretch in the seated driver's position. ![]() Ignorance is bliss....305 fo life!...haha...Poser |

I just installed the Doc I 1.5" drop on his recommendation. I am very happy with it but wish I went with a little bit longer handle. Maybe the .5" drop, but it's not a huge deal. The throws are incredibly short, overall very happy. |

give him some time to respond. he's only one person afterall, and i've been to his house once... alot of orders come in sometimes and all you see him do is work all day on making these gearswitchers of his, with is pretty labor intensive. it's quite amazing, and you gotta give the guy alot of respect that despite it takes alot of time to transform a stock shaft into one of his shifters, he doesn't charge that much for them. that's why i recommend him. he'll get back to you when he's free or taking a break LED questions? Hey web , so i got my doc I and i saw the bend you were talking about and just wanted to let you know that that bend will not change what I said. The angle is constant so the shorter the shaft the shorter the throws and vice versa. |
