So i was at actiongator tire getting my alignment checked and the guy in the shop was trying to convince me to run nitrogen which they sell for 10 bucks a tire...so i just wanted a heads up if anyone was using it and if it really makes a difference.

Everything Wheelmax lists is true-- though for the average driver, the sole largest advantage is slower migration-- meaning it leaks out more slowly than regular atmospheric air pumped in the tires. I go around 6 months between nitrogen fills on my tires.

The big advantages of nitrogen come in racing (more consitent pressure changes due to temperature, more predictable tire growth, no moisture in the tires to boil, etc), and won't really be noticed in street driving. But there's no real disadvantages to nitrogen tire fill, aside from perhaps the initial cost.

Agree. I had Nitrogen in my tires for about 6 months and filled my winter tires with it for storage for this summer. It's been about 2 months for my winter tires and they are still all sitting at 40 psi. Overall, I didn't notice much of anything different about the ride of my car but the leaking less air portion is nice

I pick up too much road debris in my tires for me to justify paying for Nitrogen. That plus I tend to adjust my tire pressures a lot.. There's a reason why I carry an air pump in my car..

Nitrogen is lighter than air (a little) and will actually reduce the weight of the wheel/tire combo (unsprung weight) so yes - it can produce better gas mileage. Less weight for the engine to turn.

I've been wondering about doing this. After you use the nitrogen the 1st time you have to use it to refill every time right? No more air allowed?

You can mix but it's better if you refill with nitrogen.

To have any benefit, the tires have to be purged and cycled-- all atmospheric air and moisture removed from the tire by filling/dumping the tire several times, then bringing the tire up to working pressure with nitrogen. Any air present in the tire will negate the nitrogen's positive effects.

hmmm .... has anyone tried helium??? I used dried air from my buddy's scuba tanks .... free FTW!!! Also, it's better than normal air because it's dried after it's pressurized to 3000 psi.

Hmm. Nitrogen is actually heavier than air. In its elemantal form, it is N2, which has a molar mass of 14g/mol.

And air itself is about 75% nitrogen already. ~20% is oxygen, which is 16g/mol in its elemental form. The average of just these two gases would make air heavier than just nitrogen.

But anyone know why N2 would diffuse slower out of a tire? Im not sure I understand why.

In simplest terms, nitrogen is bigger than oxygen. So oxygen migrates through the rubber more quickly than the nitrogen. That's all there is to it.

That's the only part of nitrogen filling I follow. The rest is just a selling gimic.

I never realized that the 0.04 Angstrom difference in the radii would make such a difference in the migration out of the tire.

I'm running N2 in my tires as well . I didn't feel much of a difference but I didn't have to pay anything to have them filled since Costco uses N2 anyways
