Stock Speaker Wiring

Hey all,

I know I've seen this around, but I've been searching for an hour and I swear, I can't find it.

I've got my HU installed (finally got the right mounting kit too), and it working great. I'm going to run an amp to the door speakers, but I want to use the stock wiring behind the dash. There are several reason for this:

1. If I ever sell the car, it's just a matter of disconnecting the aftermarket harness and plugging in the OEM radio. No tracing wires or pulling off panels to get to speakers. (Chances are, I'd sell the car with the door speakers in, after a few years of abuse, it's time to upgrade anyway)

2. My door speaker amp is mounted (or will be mounted tonight) under the front passenger seat, which is only a few feet from the dash. It's easy to run wires to there.

Anyway, back to topic, I started wiring up my speakers off the stock harnesses, but the color codes on them are different than the color codes behind the dash. For instance, the left rear has one brown and one yellow, both with a wide silver/metallic stripe that runs around the wire about every half an inch.

I need to know which one is positive and which is negative. Thanks!

Best way to do that is to hook em up and see man. If the speaker is hitting on reverse polarity, you need to flip the wires.

I can check my repair manual to see if it has a wiring diagram for the speakers in it if no one else is able to answer before I go out for a smoke.

I still don't understand why you want to use the stock speaker wires though. I'm in the process of putting in my cdt's and installing the amp for them, and I'm running new speaker wire from the amp into the doors. I'm leaving the stock wires wired to the harness and run into the doors, but I'm just capping them off in the panel. I made new speaker wire out of cat5

You can make speaker wire out of Cat 5 cable?

Yeah, you strip out the end to expose the 8 wires and separate the white ones from the colored ones. Do this with two pieces of cat5, and use the two sets of whites as your negative feed and the two sets of colors as the positive feed. Twist the two cat5 cables every 12 inches and tape the twist to keep it there.

The reason for using cat5 is that each of the 8 strands is a solid piece of oxygen free copper. Each white and color pair is twisted throughout the inside of the cable and shielded. The twisting cancels out any type of em fields that would otherwise cause interference. You car is basically a giant em field which is why its so easy to pick up white noise like alternator hum in the system. Using cat5 is basically the best shielded wiring you can use, and its cheap. You just have to put in the time to make it. It took me about 2 hours to make 2 2' pieces and 2 12' pieces.

I checked the repair manual and it doesn't provide a wiring diagram for the radio harness. A friend of mine is going to check tweeter's install database, but you may have to just check them the oldfashioned way like crash said.

I have the scion service manual. I checked the section on the audio system and it shows you how to remove the speakers and the antenae, but it didn't provide any wiring diagrams. I was just out on a quick smoke break so I didn't think to check elsewhere. Where is it.

Nice link, Doc

No worries. I'll find it. I'd like to know where it is for the next time, but since its in there, I'll just have to look a little closer. Its [probably in the other I book I didn't have in the car that has all the diagnostic stuff in it. I checked the index for wiring diagrams and didn't see any, but it was a quick search. Thanx, Squall!

Not the harness, the wires at the speaker. They are a different color than at the HU.

They're not different colors. I've only done comp switches in half a dozen tCs.
