So, like the title sez, the Kenwood Excelon I have been running the last couple years to power my Solobaric has passed away. There was a nice, small service for just close friends and family, and everything went as well as can be expected.

I'm now in the market for a new amp. I'm looking for something with an rms around 600w stable at 2ohms. Preferreably with a signal to noise ratio > 95dB. Right now I'm looking at the Alpine PDX 1.600 and the JL Audio 500/1v2. I know that the JL is the superior amp of these two, but I'm wondering how much difference I'd be able to tell running a 12" L7. I'm not sure that the sub itself is capable of showing a major distinction between the two amps.

Either way, any opinions or other suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanx

How about the Kicker KX2500.1 Amp, my friend has it to run her Kicker L7 15inch SoloBaric subwoofer, and it hits hard and sounds awesome

jerz_papi: My L7 is a dual vc 4ohm running in series at 2ohms, peak 1500w and RMS 750w. How do you like your PDX? I have a PDX 2.150 for my front components cuz the highs and mids are exceptional, but I wasn't sure about using one for a sub. A very comprehensive review I found on the amp stated that the only thing the PDX lacked was good lows. Here's the review: http://www.caraudiomag.co...150_amplifier/index.html. Thsi guy was very thorough in his testing, but I was thinking that without a better sub, I might not be able to tell the difference. Also, seeing the rated signal to noise ratio of 80dB's got me kind of leary as well, but I figured the actual numbers were higher. Do you still have the birth sheet that came with the amp? If so, could you tell me what the actual s/n ratio tested at?

Jorge: I just looked up that Kicker, and that is one helluva nice amp! http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/7431 Its just a little more then I wanted to spend. I'm trying to keep the cost under 400.00 if I'm going to be able to still pay for some engine work I've been putting off for too long now. Man that beast would take up my whole hatch

Crystal: Any particular JBL model you're recommending?

does it matter how many channels it has?

I'd prefer a mono amp. No sense in getting one that has a bunch of stuff that won't be used. I'm content with the setup, so I don't plan on adding an additional subs. Once/if the L7 dies I will probably upgrade to a different sub, but unitl then it already hits harder then I actually listen to it. I guess if the price and quality is right, I don't really car how many channels it has. Its tough to find a multi channel amp at the same quality/output level as a comparably priced mono amp though.

For instance, with the PDX's, a mono 600rms I can get for 289.00, but a four channel 150rms is like 450.00. Same power oputput from both though just routed differently.

^^Huh, that's a pretty nice amp! I don't have any experience with the Hifonics brand. I take it you've used their products before?

unfortunately i have not but alot of people say Hifonics is highly decent, although supposedly theyre not as great as they used to be due to a change in ownership or sumshit but ill be buying a multichannel one soon for my 4 speakers if that helps

I was looking around online and found several positive reviews. Also talked to a friend of mine on break who had one and was very pleased. Seems like a good buy. Check ikesound.com and sonicelectronix.com for better prices

Its possible. I'm still weighing my options. Its definitely in the right price range, but it puts out way more power then I actually need. I also just found a memphis amp on ebay for a good price and high rated seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/MEMPH...ViewItem#ebayphotohosting

Decisions, decisions...

Just get the Excellon X1R and another Solo Baric, then you can run 600 rms to 2 12" subs haha.

Seriously though, Memphis rocks man, get it if its what you are looking for.

my choice would be a mtx ta7801 800rms @ 2ohms or the ta5601 which is 600rms @ 2ohms, but i am kinda partial. if you can find a mtx 1501D, that is a badazz amp. i is about five years old but it it STOUT. i used to run the 81000D, wish i still had it. i wouldn't worry too much about the signl to noise ratio on a sub amp. i mean if you aren't competing for sound quality. with todays over synthesized bass and crappy recordings you can't really tell that much difference. i've seen these amps from 200-400 bucks new on ebay. whee i used to work we sold them for 600-700 when they fist came out. the square subs hit hard because of the extra surface area of the cone but they aren't really known for sound quality anyway.

or just get a kicker kx series to go with the sub. 04KX600.1

Thanx for all the input guys!

07sctc: Thanx for confirming that for me about the s/n ratio. That's what I was thinking, but I needed to hear someone say it.

As much as I'd like to get that memphis, I just don't know about buying a used amp off of ebay. I was hoping to pick up one of the discontinued JL's from Tweeter on clearance, but they're out of them. I'm thinking about just going with the PDX to match my other one, but I'm going to look into that Kicker amp and the MTX one. I think now its just going to be a game of price is right.

So, I ended up ordering the PDX 1.600. Figured it'll match my other one and I can stack them in the back. Placed the order with ikesound.com today. Pics'll be up once I get them installed. Gonna be so nice to have bass again!!!

Ahhhhh, I missed the "used" amp part. Memphis is a great choice, but NEVER buy used audio equipment haha.
