Hey guys,

I just had a header, down-pipe, megan mid-pipe, and HKS Hi-Power exhaust system installed on my 05 automatic tC. Basically, when giving the car any gas on this setup, it sounded like a jet engine taking off. It was way too loud for comfort and the rasp was beyond horrible.

So I reinstalled the stock axle back muffler on the car and it's quiet again. However, it is making a tinny rattling noise when I give it a little gas now. I don't think the stock axle back can handle this much flow.

* I believe the HKS was just getting so much air that it was getting amplified (at the muffler) beyond comfort to basically any driver. If I left it on, I would have been pulled over by the police I'm sure...

Can any experienced users tell me an axle back that I could get that just gives me a decent little hum? In other words, probably one of, if not the, quietest axle back money can buy.

Thanks,
Sean

By the way, I was looking at the TRD axle back because it looks essentially like the stock exhaust. I know it sounds deeper, but would it just be over-kill too if i linked it up to my current rig. I really don't want to keep the HKS because of the angle and size. I want something that looks more OEM.

Hmm, so I dont think the problem is how much flow the stock axleback can handle. If it can handle a supercharger, a new header is no problem, haha.

As long as you have that header on, you should get a resonator welded in to your midpipe. That would be the best way to quiet it down and still use any muffler you like.

If thats not an option, try a Tanabe MT exhaust. Vicious has one and he says his exhaust is pretty quiet, even with a header. See if maybe he can give you more info!

Ahhh! Dont get TRD with an aftermarket header! Haha, it sounds like a hive of bees trapt in a can.

Thank you for the feedback... I'll keep that in mind. I may try the Tanabe MT because if I remember correctly it has a stock shape. If that fails me, could anyone link me to best bang for buck resonator that links well with the Megan mid-pipe?

Thanks again,
Sean

i think this is the Tanabe MT
if so then ill just say personally i dont like it...coz that looked like stock header, wich wuld lead me to think all of it was stock except the MT and even that alone was resonating

If you get a header, you need to get another resonator. That's just a fact of our engine and exhaust system. B/c the header removes the primary CAT and the secondary is simply a high flow, it doesn't slow the exhaust flow enough and by the time it hits the stock midpipe resonator, it's still ricocheting off the exhaust piping. You need to add another resonator prior to the axle back or you'll still have rasp at high rpms.

That is the stock header. Our aftermarket available header manufacturers do not make it possible to reuse the stock heat shield. That's just a clip of an axleback on a stock exhaust system. At the base of the shield, you can see the buldge of the primary CAT.

95% of the problem is going to come from the midpipe. i would add like 2 24inch resonators and it should sound pretty good.

the axle back isn't your problem, so save yourself some money and just get a few resonators.

Thanks everyone for the help... talked to a mechanic and he said the cheapest most cost effective solution would be to sell my megan mid pipe.. so if anyone is interested.. i'll be selling it at a discounted rate.. only been used for a couple days..

$150 + s/h of choice (I payed $225 shipped)

I have the original box so I will ship anywhere in the US

your mechanic lead you wrong becuase i had the stock midpipe for a while and it still sounded raspy. even on the stock one you have to add a resonator. you best bet is to keep the megan midpipe and add one or two resonators at any muffler shop and that would take care of the problem

^^^ you are correct in some aspect.... but the most "COST EFFECTIVE" way is just to sell his megan for 150, and get a custom midpipe made with 2 resonators which will cost like 100-125 depending on where you go.
