Gallery system being rewritten - Request features / Changes

Howdy gang,

Just like the start of the new private messaging system, I am in need of rewriting the Gallery feature (click the Galleries tab at the top, http://www.clubsciontc.com/galleries) to unclutter our existing system. Compared to other features on the site, Galleries code is most closest to being imported into our new site framework, but I'd rather just rewrite the entire thing than drop in the existing code. The main idea of the gallery rewrite is to incorporate features and fix things that YOU request.

Remember, this site is YOUR site. I make changes based on YOUR requests (assuming they are reasonable and useful to everyone). If there is no discussion around the gallery, then what you get is what we currently have on the site.


This thread is for you all to request features to be incorporated in a new gallery system. Please keep in mind that we need requests/ideas that will be beneficial to everyone.

i think that we should also have a gallery where you can search by the user's name rather than the folders we have.

I think it would be cool to make it so that when you hover the mouse over the image thumbnail, that it changes the image in the main viewing pane automatically instead of clicking the thumbnail to refresh the page. Kind of like how the product images on amazon work. Don't know what's involved in that though...

edit: Kristina, you can get to a user's galleries from their profile page, but that's not a bad idea.

I plan on having additional information on photos other than just a picture, so a page refresh is almost required. However, I can make the thumbs a little big, and I may even be able to do a preview portion where hovering over a thumb will show you a slightly larger picture, but to get more details / comments / etc on a picture, you'll be required to click on it.

Gotcha. Sounds good. I think that'll be good to be able to add a description on the photos. Obviously some are self explanatory, but when people put up galleries of car shows like NOPI and whatnot, that'll be nice to add a description.

Adding comments will also be useful for DIY galleries. I'm looking forward to that update. Page refeshing is no big deal at all.

I've been wanting to suggest features for this for a while

here goes (and if something is mentioned while I'm typing this up, just scratch it if already said)

1. bigger images!!
2. image captions, album descriptions.
3. search function
4. sorting function, it will be nice to sort albums by date, size, number of images, date of creation, ect
5. ability to rearrange photos
6. display of URL for each image

I def agree with Orin and everytime i add a new profile pic it gets chopped down way to much.

1. Bigger images are available, I just never put a link to them. Said images will be obvious this time around though.

2. Will do, and will do.

3. Definitely. The search functionality will be similar to the upcoming one for Private Messages. I'll actually finish PM search first before working on Gallery search.

4. This is doable

5. Didn't think about this, but I think it would be useful.

6. Definitely. This would be useful for posting in threads.

hmm...i always want to ZOOM. i think zooming would be a great little feature especially when we're trying to follow a DIY. other than that, just to see the pic up close sometimes would be awesome. especially when you wanna see the detail on a mod you had never seen before. obviously the amount of detail would be limited to picture quality but i think it would be a great and helpful feature to have. once in place people will be zooming a lot more than we think.

With the whole looking at pictures in the gallery, i really don't like that fact that when you click a new picture.. its like tho whole page reloads to make that image bigger..

It would be nice to have the above features, but add a couple of pages with all the galleries' main photo on them so you can just click on them and see them immediately (sorry if someone already suggested this, I didn't have time to read the whole thread).
