New clutch and flywheel driving me CRAZY!!!

Tire Changer

I recently had the Fidanza lightweight flywheel and Clutchmasters stage 3 clutch installed, and I cannot start in first gear smoothly!!! Reverse is the same way! It feels like the flywheel isn't matching well with the clutch or something. It shakes a little, even though I'm being really careful. ALL other gears are ok.

The clutch cable is out as far as it will go(maximum play).

ANY ADVICE?!?!

sorry there is no clutch cable on these cars, and you were asking for this when you installed the stage 3 clutch

stage 3 is pointless unless your going to utilize the clamping force, otherwise your just making it harder on yourself

haha, stage III?....WHY? Even stage I turbo..hell, stage II turbo wouldn't require a stage III clutch!

If it's a puck clutch, then that's what you get to deal with. The most you should have bought was a Stage II kevlar/carbon sprung clutch with that flywheel. You're going to hate your car really fast.

Clutchmasters Stage III is a puck type... yikes!

I've got a Fidanza Flywheel with an OEM style replacement clutch, smooth like butter.

Puck type???

Here's what happenned: I ordered a stage 2 as was recommended by numerous others. Clutchmasters sent me the wrong clutch(as in not even for a tC), then overnighted me a stage 3 because they either didn't have any 2's in stock or they wanted to get rid of a 3, I dunno. The car had been in the shop 5 days by then, so I figured stage 3 will have to work.

I could really use some POSITIVE advice, like that of darkdayz08's.

I just want to make sure the clutch or flywheel doesn't break due to a labor mistake or by fundamentally flawed parts. Does the symptom of 'shuddering' simply come from the type of clutch it is?

Thanks

Eh, just pokin' some fun...

The feeling you are having is b/c the clutch catches so quickly that any little vibration from the crank is transferred immediately through the trany and up into the car. You are going to have that feeling for a while until it's broken in, but even then, it's going to be there for the most part. A puck clutch is one that has segments vs. being one continuous ring.

Ok... so If I can get ahold of a stage two clutch, will the Fidanza flywheel need to be RESURFACED???

The Fidanza flywheel uses a plate which can be replaced rather than having to re-surface the flywheel. I'm sure replacing the plate is much cheaper.

Is the replacement friction plate something that would come seperately than the flywheel? I didn't realize I'd have to buy that as well...

So you're using a Clutchmaster Stage 3 (the fx300) Segmented Kevlar?

If so that is what I'm currently running however it is paired up to a competition clutch ultralight forged steel flywheel.

For the first couple hundred miles it was freakin crazy! The bite was hard and fast (very very easy to stall and look like n00b). Clutch pedal catch point only 3/4" off the ground approximately. That's never going to change, however the initial bite will tone down alot as you break it in. Being that you're still N/A you can drive it hard and it will break in fine. Just don't go crazy dropping the clutch hard above 2k or feathering the sh!t out of it from a dig.

After 500 miles on a fx300, it's pleasure with only slightly heavier pedal feel than stock. It grabs better much better than stock and once she's engaged, hold on!

Also, you may notice a very very slight amount of chatter feathering the clutch sometimes, nothing like a puck style. I'm not positive, but it is probably due to the fact that it is a segmented disc.

Any questions may be I can help, feel free to pm!

here's the link to the pick since it got resized bad

the flywheel has the plate bolted into it, instead of resurfacing the flywheel after time, you buy a replacement plate and screw it in.

The new clutch is JUST NOW being installed today. I went with a stage I to try to get as close to stock-feel as possible. I've now been without my tC for 2 WEEKS!!!

I'm really hoping this works out...

BTW, What is it that the tranny shop adjusted to vary the play in the pedal?

Stage I clutch has been installed, and I am pretty happy with it. It doesn't feel like-stock, but it's pretty close. The new flywheel makes it harder to shift smoothly, but I think the gain in acceleration far outweighs the loss in driveability. You can drive smoothly through the gears if you're concentrating really hard.

I hope to take my tC to the track soon to see how low a 15 it will run.

Will update later
