^my photograph of the flywheel right out of the box

I've have this lightweight flywheel installed on my car for about 27,000 miles in preparation of going turbo or staying N/A, it doesn't matter. The benefits are there whether you're F/I or not.

I'm not going to say this is going to blow you away. One of the first things that's apparent is the RPM just shoot right up when your clutch is depressed. You'll rev match in heart beat.

The difference between the heavy stock performance and the lightened parts is about night and day. The RPM moves quite nicely and the torque especially noticeable when climbing second gear.

Performance Traits

Aside from the better RPM climb, it's also possible to lose speed much faster. There have been many situations on the highway where I needed to slow quickly and due to the reduced rotational momentum of the lighter parts, I was able to slow my vehicle simply by letting off the gas. That so far has been one of my favorite traits.

Summary

Is the modification worth the install bucks? If you plan on building a serious machine later down the road this is a must. It's a nice modification but if you're a daily driver you can save your pennies for other performance modifications in the meantime.

I do love the lightened flywheel, but I can't say I can't be without it. I planned on replacing my clutch with an Exedy Stage I so I figured putting in a Fidanza Flywheel at the same time would be a savings on labor later down the road.

It's a fun modification that you'll appreciate when going head to head in a drag race (at the track of course).

Nice Review!

What was the price for the install? My flywheel is sitting in the basement, cuz I'm still looking for/deciding on a clutch. My engine mounts should show up today, and my clutch line is on the way too. I figure if the price isn't too bad, I might just have a shop put them all in for me.

finding a decent price from a shop was the hardest thing for me. Most shops wanted to charge me $550 dollars for install. Even the dealership I worked at wanted to charge me $362 dollars at employee pricing.

I met a couple of guys from Peru that own their own tiny garage. They admitted never working on a Scion before but they do a lot of import tuning.

I checked out their shop and they know their stuff. They gave me a steal of an install price of about $200 I was so happy I tipped the guys an extra $50 bucks and they bought a new pool table for their shop.

i installed the fiadanza in mine last summer. my stock clutch went out so i figured why not going ahead and do it since i'm already in there.

now i don't know how if feels with n/a because i was already boosted, but i can say that i felt the difference big time. i could tell that the car was pulling much harder in the mid to upper range of power. the turbo spools quicker and it just all around feels better.

Car is being put on hold until further notice. Work will continue pending on if i get the new toy i want or not. I will keep you all posted.

UPDATE ON THE TUNE. It went ok but a few little issues that are causing my performance to be less than expected have shown themselves. Now I have to resolve them when I get the chance and it will be back to PTuning for the finishing touches.

Nice Review.

Orin, did this have a bigger impact on your pull than your light weight pulley?

without a doubt ^^

the lightweight pulley is nice, but the lightweight flywheel is a much more dramatic effect.

I put a Fidanza flywheel in my old Prelude and it was a world of difference. It revs so much faster. The jerk on the highway when you let off gets old, trust me. This is a great mod to do if you need to drop your tranny anyway. I replaced the flywheel and clutch at the same time in the Prelude, and if I need to drop the tranny in the tC I'll definitely put a stage 2 clutch and Fidanza flywheel in it.

talking with my shop, if your boosted a lightweight should not really be for because of the rev is so much higher and faster plus drops quicker, in return your loosing gains from being boosted, but if your going for all motor lightweight is the way

^^

What? If you're boosted, you really should go with a lightweight flywheel. Boosted or not, the benefits are there.

The exception would be if your car has practically no torque, then you would lose momentum very quickly going uphill. This flywheel is heavy enough to not have to worry about either of the above.

Being boosted has nothing to do with clutch application. The lighter the flywheel, the easier you spool so it's better overall performance overall. The negative side to any lightweight flywheel would be misshifting and overreving. But, that happens in any car.

I also noticed loss of highway MPG I guess because your speed varies more than with a heavier flywheel that can keep its momentum up. As for the boost, taking weight out of the drive train is always a good investment. Boosted or not, you will still see gains from the Fidanza flywheel.

^Gains will be seen on an acceleration chart, not on a dyno at constant revs. People think that when they mod the drivetrain, the hp output will go up. Well, technically it does but not at a constant rate. In lower gears, the acceleration during each gear shows more horsepower exerted due to the lower rotational mass. This excess horsepower is rotationally released and not extra horsepower created by the drivetrain.

Hope that clears things up for those who may think otherwise.

Perfect wording... I think I was trying to get that across but failed :o Either way, a car with a lighter flywheel is more fun to drive in my book!

That'll be my next way as soon as my stocker burns out on me. 70k and absolutely no slipping. I can't complain

Yeah, it sucks when you can't mod your car because the stock parts are working perfectly... DAMN their engineering! lol

Orin, I can't remember but did you install the clutch/flywheel or was it installed at a shop?

^ I had a small (mom & pop) shop do the install for me. I wanted to replace my stock clutch because I suspected it was on it's last leg (it showed wear)

Is there anything wrong with just putting in the lightweight flywheel and leaving in the stock clutch?

Minus the fact you'd waste time and money to just do the flywheel when you could save labor and do them both at once.......no.
