You do get a little gain of hp & ft-lbs with an axle-back but the number at the wheel is very small. Maybe about 1.2 whp.

A mid-pipe will add a little more. Basically the more you replace your stock exhaust with a 2.25-2.5 inch diameter pipe, the better the performance.

Let's not forget a nice header + s-pipe

the injen helps the most when you have other mods to support it. it was my first mod, and i didnt feel much of a difference when i put it on. but when i took it off to sell it(after i added intake/header/s-pipe, i immediately felt the power loss when put the stock muffler back on.

Which midpipe is the best is always going to be a matter of debate. Ask 5 different people and you'll get 5 different answers. I personally would recommend having a custom midpipe made at 2.25-2.5" to match the rest of your exhaust. Put either a big resonator 28-32" or two smaller ones (18"), and if your feeling froggy, add a high flow cat. Custom will be cheaper and the fitment is guaranteed.

If the midpipe diameter is different from the Injen axle back diameter, would that cause power loss (rather less power gain)? And follow up, would "non matching" diameter sound different from the matching diameter set up?

Whatever your smallest diameter pipe on your exhaust is is going to be the bottleneck in the overall system. You could have a 4" catback, but the flow can't get out any faster then the 2" s-pipe in front can empty into the catback. Now considering the amount of power we are working with on an N/A setup, the differene isn't going to be dramatic, but it will be there nonetheless.

As for the sound, I have no idea what the difference, if any, would be. When I did my exhaust, I did header to tip in one shot, so I don't have any experience with running different sized pieces at the same time...
