Something we all can relate to is seeing the Police Interceptor parked on the side of the highway and suddenly everyone around you is hitting their brakes.

You know you were traveling at least 15 mph over the speed limit but you weren't pulled over. It seems as though you lucked out.

probably not

image showing the use of light emitting detection LIDAR

unlike the old technology of the 50's the use of infrared laser emitting devices is now much more common among law enforcement officers.

the LIDAR works by sending a series of light samples toward a moving vehicle and these light samples bounce off your vehicle to create a picture back to the gun thats will give a very accurate image of your speed.

Myth Number 1 ----- I've got a matted paint job, the light won't affect me.

Unless you've got access to a top secret Lockheed Martin million dollar paint job, nothing is going to fool the LIDAR device.

Light can move at a rate of 984,000,000 feet per second (or 186,375 mph) The reading is very quick and very accurate and allows police to take hundreds and hundreds of samples withing a fraction of a second. Another advantage to using laser is the emitted light "cone" is only about 3 feet at from from 1,000 feet away. This means an officer can aim and target one specific car much the same way that a sniper can pick out his target. Because the readings are so quick, the officer can also pull the trigger and obtain one reading in about 1 second and aim at another vehicle and obtain a reading about 1 second later.

Myth Number 2 ----- If the car next to me is going faster, the officer has to pull him over, not me.

WRONG you can be singled out and although it may not seem right, if you're speeding you can be targeted and pulled over.

Myth Number 3 ----- I'm moving with the crowd so I'm safe right?

WRONG you're vehicle can still be targeted and singled out even though you weren't the only one speeding.

Myth Number 4 ----- If stay XX number of miles over the speed limit, I won't be pulled over.

if you're exceeding the speed limit you're already at risk for citation. if you've traveled at XX over the speed limit and continue to do so, statistically it's only a matter of time before you're caught.

One of the biggest disadvantages when using LIDAR is the officer must aim the device to get the reading, unlike RADAR which relies on the Doppler shift effect to get it's reading. Doppler radar sends out bursts of radio frequencies and the speed at which those signals are bounced back create the frequency of your speed. Because the burst is so huge, an officer does not need to aim.

Myth Number 5 ----- if the patrol car isn't not using a device, they can't pull me over for speeding

a sneaky method officers use is called "matching" or "pacing" involves the use of cruise control from a visible distance. If you're moving a 70 mph, the officer will match at 70 mph and use the speedometer as a device for calculating your speed. Once the officer is matched, if you speed further you'll be caught. The only way I've avoided this is finding a safe cruising speed (the speed limit) and using cruise control. Any officer will be able to visually detect that your speed is locked and they will eventually end matching and look for another target.

Myth Number 6 ----- My radar detector is clear and I see no cops I can go fast and not be caught.

Not true, a more recent tactic normally performed in congested & traffic areas is the use of aviation devices called a "Aerial Patrol" Normally there will be a sign to warn the use of aircraft for speed detection, but don't count on it.

Here is how it works, an aircraft (normally a helicopter) will use a pointer such as a landmark or line drawn on the road as a POINT A. Then the helicopter will track your time to POINT B, the time in which you reach point b becomes your estimated average speed. If your average is too high (over the legal speed) you will be pulled over by the patrol car waiting far ahead which is radioed by helicopter.

The technology officers use will continue to evolve and if you're really worried about speeding tickets, do not speed. The cost involved with a speed violation goes beyond the initial fee, it will cost you hundreds of dollars over the next 3 years.

Nice write up

Here is some more information on Police LIDAR for those that would like some more information on the technical aspects as well as some suggestions for how to beat the system:

color of your car matters too. Black absorbs all spectrums of light so there is a higher chance of the gun not getting a return from the lazer, cops counter this by aiming for your license plate or head light which reflects easily. This is why radar defazers usually have bumber and license plate sensors. White reflects all light so a cop can usually get a read on any part of your car.

yeah cops can pull u over for going 1 mph over the speed limit if he feels froggy. i normally try not to do more than 5mph over i have been busted for doing a 66 in a 60. so let the cruise control be yr best friend

Sorry, but that's simply not true. Well atleast not everywhere. Here in PA, you cannot be fined for anything less than 5 MPH over the posted limit. Therefore no reason to pull you over. Obviously a cop can pull you over for any reason, even going 55 in a 55 what can you do?ignore him? But the point is... no penalty until 5+ MPH in PA

^^That may be true in PA, but other places it is not. Take Delaware as an example. There are tons of small towns on the way to the beach where cops will sit and do nothing but pull over out of towners. You can and will get a ticket for doing 1mph over the speed limit, and plenty of my friends can testify to that. These little towns generate a significant portion of their revenue by pulling people over from out of state that will just pay the fine because it is too long of a drive to return for the court date.

i was going 65 in a 35 and the cop said it was my lucky night and just gave me a fix it ticket for no plates. =] and down here in la even though cops are assholes they will not waste their time and pull you over for going 1 mph over. it has to to be 5 miles over the speed limit to get a ticket.

I drive through a hick little Podunk town in Michigan to get to work everyday, and there is only one cop in the Whole town. (Even Mayberry had more police). So he pulls me over for doing 33 in a 30 mph zone. I ended up fighting the ticket and winning because I basically asked how I was supposed to constantly regulate my speed and still safely keep my eyes on the road. The judge said that you should be able to fluctuate 5 above and 5 below the speed limit without any repercussions.

3 mph over the speed limit? That cop should have been suspended for wasting the Judge's time.

well lets not forget another addition to the myths.
traveling from point a to point b takeing the time it takes u to hit from a to b and then calculating your speed.
i got busted with that a couple weeks ago.

Sometimes they do myth 6 on toll roads. Like from one toll to the other. If your average speed is higher than the speed limit you get a ticket! Just like the helicopter.

I fly like a bat out of hell on the toll roads in Houston. I haven't gotten a ticket. Not to say that it won't happen. I take the risk knowingly. They haven't started doing the Toll Tickets yet atleast as far as I know

Usually the Toll Road is the only road clear enough to speed on in Houston... all the rest are too garbled up with traffic to do much speeding.

Honestly though, I hadn't heard of any of those myths. It's just been so long since I've gotten a speeding ticket...
