Getting in to an accident sucks. And I hope none of us ever do, but statistically, it is all too possible. If you are ever in an accident, check to make sure you and your passengers are ok. If anyone is hurt, call first response immediately. Health is number one priority.

Here are some things you can do if you are involved in a crash with another vehicle:

Quote:
1. Stay as calm as possible.

2. Check for injuries. Life and health are more important than damage to vehicles. When in doubt, call an ambulance.

3. If the accident is minor and there are no serious injuries, move cars to a safe place, rather than risk being in moving traffic.

4. Turn on hazard lights. If warranted, and possible, use cones, warning triangles or flares for safety.

5. Call the police, even if the accident is minor.

6. Notify your insurance agent about the accident immediately.

7. Don't sign any document unless it is for the police or your insurance agent

8. Make immediate notes about the accident including the specific damages to all vehicles involved. If the name on the auto registration and/or insurance policy is different from the name of the driver, establish the relationship and jot it down. Get witness information, if possible, as well.

9. Be polite, but don't tell the other drivers or the police that the accident was your fault, even if you think it was. Likewise, do not accuse the other drivers of being at fault at this time. Everyone is usually shaken up immediately after an accident, and it is wise to state only the facts. Limit your discussion of the accident to the insurance agent and the police. Even if the facts are embarrassing or detrimental to you, be truthful.

10. If you have a camera handy, and it is safe to do so, it may be helpful to photograph the accident scene.

11. If possible, do not leave the accident scene before the police officers and other drivers do.

12. Finally, remember that while getting the facts is very important, investigating the accident should be left to the police officers and the insurance companies.

(As for number 9, definitely dont admit or point fault. Its not for us as the driver to decide that. And as for number 10, get a disposible camera. It doesn't have to be one of your fancy shmancy digital doohickies. But a camera phone might work too)

I found a form I think everyone should print out and keep in their glove compartment: http://www.certifiedfirst.com/accident/accident.pdf

This form will help guide you in what information you need to write down. An accident is pretty scary and its easy to forget what you have to do.

If your accident isn't with another vehicle, then there is likely property damage. Call the police. Even if you are embarassed/stoned/drunk. But try to write down everything you can.

Remember another thing, if you are ok after the accident, it doesn't mean you are safe yet. There are steps you can take to make sure you dont get hurt after an accident:

Quote:
1. Stay calm. Remember that neither of you planned for this to happen. Gather your composure and feel good knowing that you have everything you need if an accident happens: cell phone, camera, pen, accident form, insurance, safety kit, cones or flares, flashlight and medical card.

2. Clear the roadway. If no one is hurt and the cars are driveable, drive off the roadway. Other drivers will appreciate you for this, and so will emergency workers. If the cars are not driveable, you are now a potential hazard to yourself and other drivers. Put your hazard lights on, remain in the car with your seatbelt fastened and call 911 for help.

3. Look around. Be aware of oncoming and passing cars. When safe, get out of the car, stay out of the street and set out cones or flares to warn other cars of the accident.

Its tough to keep calm. But its very important. You might be angry that some idiot crashed in to you, but its best to keep a level head.

One personal tip I'd like to add is to make sure you have one of those instant phone chargers. They plug in to your phone and charge it with AA batteries. Along with this, keep a first-aid kit in the car.

But the best thing you can do is avoid the accident in the first place. Drive safely everyone!

Thanks, man.

All the info is true. (For the ones that havent gotten in a accident, and I hope that nobody gets in one, period.)

I was rear-ended, in April of 06, by a Coors Van. No doubt, I got money, just feeling the effects of it, isnt worth it. Be careful, peeps.

one thing i think is worth adding to this is a few things i have learned from personal experience and from what some of my friends have gone through

if the other person involved in the accident with you does not have insurance, IMMEDIATELY take down as much information as you can about their vehicle (make, model, color, license plates and a good detailed description of the driver) and call the police ASAP!

if the other person involved in the accident with you tells you they will pay for the damages "out of pocket" read above statement

because they probably dont have insurance, or dont have a license, or they may even be drunk or have warrants, and will tell you anything to avoid having the cops show up.
