It snowed quite a bit today and I was in my community with untreated roads and making a left turn. I lightly tapped the brakes and engaged in my turn but i started to skid and slide almost hitting a parked car. I hit the brakes as hard as i could and it became real stiff and i freaked out and pulled e-brake as hard as i could. Was that the ABS kicking in when i floored the brake? Is this normal?

When the ABS kicks in it'll feel like the pedal pushing back at you because the brakes will release to allow the tires to spin again if they lock up. When you're sliding though, nothings going to help until you get the car straight again. Be careful.

abs isnt there to stop you faster, its job is to help you maintain control of your car.

Yeah exactly. ABS will allow you to steer a little better, not necessarily stop you from skidding.

But damn I hear ya, its scary loosing control in the snow. And the sound it makes it gut wrenching.

haha yupp your right its not designed to help you stop faster but some of the times theres nothing in the world to help you maintain control on the ice or snow...even though pulling the parking break works agains abs system it is effective to the understeer when your on ice!

I live in the Chicagoland area and luckily ABS hasn't gotten me into an accident yet, but I have had a few slides because of it. Like most people said already, it doesn't help you stop faster, it just helps you get better control as far as steering goes.

I hit the brakes firmly (but not suddenly) the other day when I was going over this speed hump by my house and the ABS just happened to kick in (pointlessly) so instead of sliding (possibly) sideways over the thing, I went straight over it. Luckily it was pretty covered in snow, so my car didn't go thump back down after going over it.

the best thing to do it to keep your wheel as straight as possible. abs will not help if your turned all the way to either side!

I can feel you on that one...i just had my wisdom teeth taken out yesterday so i'm down for the count this weekend, but the snow we had about a month ago here in MD when i was driving home I started to slide and i felt the ABS kick in and it pretty much saved me from sliding into the rear end of another car because i was able to steer over to the side of the road and bump into the snow packed against the curb...it feels pretty funny when the ABS kicks in on our cars
