I am not sure what it is called but they sell a tool that you can clamp around the oil filter to get it off. If you have already gone through the process of draining the oil and have no way of getting to the store for this tool, then I would try some big ass pliers.

If you can't get out to get one, try to either use a set of large pliers like tc1stgen suggested. If you don't have anything like that available, I have another suggestion, and although it sounds silly, it might just work. take a long thick screwdriver or a small prybar, or even just a spike or a knife and drive it into the filter. If possible drive it straight through. This should provide more leverage against the center point similar to a lugwrench when changing a tire. You don't need a lot of room, just enough to break it loose. Then pull out you're "specialty tool" and twist off by hand.

Wow, I have to say that I never thought of that but it definately is a good suggestion. Sometimes you have to rig something to make it work for you and this is a good example of that. Great post!

i use an oil filter socket, its a HUGE black socket, its really thin.... go to any auto store, and ask for it, and it should be one of the smaller ones
