I've had a Phantom Grip in my tranny and it just isn't worth it. If you really want a differential, don't get that. It appears the Quaife makes one for the Scion, I was just checking out there website. If it is true, then just go with Quaife, you cannot go wrong. I went from a Phantom Grip to a Quaife and it is a night and day difference.

quaife's vendor license was bought by TRD so all the diffs from them are rebranded trd products now

^^ what he said...

the Quaife LSD is the best choice to get... it's just one of those things that gets me because you have to now pay more because TRD wanted to slap their name on it.

install is a PITA... so as operatic was basically saying... if you're gonna get something like that.... and going through the labor (or paying a pretty penny for it)..

might as well just really save up for the better product.

^^ well that being said, the Quaife/TRD LSD is still a good deal for what you get. it's not like TRD doubled up the price of the LSD

I was just looking into getting the quaife LSD, and the install I got quoted was around 1300.00. And I hate to say it, but screw TRD for putting a stamp on the LSD and adding 400.00 to the price! It's just not worth 2600.00 for parts and labor to me right now

If you have the tools / knowledge / time to remove your transmission, the install is cheaper. I was able to get my Quaife LSD installed for $120 as I just gave the transmission shop my tranny and that was it. Saves A LOT of money + the turn around time was within the day.

^^I asked them what the difference would be if I brought them the tranny and they told me to subtract about 550 from the price because that was the labor for removal and reinstall. Maybe I just asked the wrong shop

I wouldnt buy 1 from trd because I have heard and seen ppl snappin them there a waste of money from trd and they dont cover them with a warranty, go with 1 that has a lifetime waranty so if u break it they replace it, i heard there not very hard to install and toyota wont install them because of waranty issues i have a freind that buys them from a company i dont remb what its called but he said if it breaks the company covers the price of it they will replace it and have a new 1 instlled on ur car with no fee..

I have the luxury of owning another car so I basically drove around with the tranny and diff in my car and went from tranny shop to tranny shop and asking them for the price. Told em I had everything ready to go, they gave me a price / time, I asked them to write it down as a quote then I went to another place, if they gave me a higher price I told em, I'll go to so and so, they're offering to do it for this much in this many hours. I must have done that for about 3 hours until I found a guy that did it for the cheapest same day because I already, in his words "had all the hard stuff done."

Shop around, I'm sure you can find a pretty decent price. Removing a tranny is a lot of work and from how the guy I went to said it, once you the tranny out of the car, putting things in / taking things out is fairly easy. As long as you know what your doing of course =)

Operatic, can i ask what was wrong or not worth the "Phantom Grip"?

i always figured it would be a great deal, what with it being only 400$
+ install. Its supposedly a quality item.
I ask because you simply say "its just isn't worth it" "I went from a Phantom Grip to a Quaife and it is a night and day difference."

Can you explain a little more?
i have heard there "MAY" be a bit of chatter BUT i have also heard of true LSD's doing the same...

wow that was more intense than that one time I forgot how to sit down...

can you repeat that in english please?

uhm.. the TRD LSD is made by Quaife... a repuatble company as well as very high quality products.

and yes.. it is covered by warranty... i'm confused where you got the ideas you stated.

the phantom grip isn't a true LSD. i think it's just some shimming to your stock tranny to make it act as though it were an LSD but it doesn't fully lock the diff for 50/50 power i think

Technically the Phantom Grip, is not even a real LSD. It's two metal plates that are spring-loaded that push against the spider gears in your stock diff. Over time the pressure against those spider gears may break them leaving your diff and possibly your entire tranny trashed. There have been a few threads about this on other forums of a Phantom Grip breaking and destroying the transmission. You'll find online stories of the Phantom Grip either being great or horrible.

As for my own personal experience, a Phantom Grip compared to a Quaife stands no chance. Heres why -

The Quaife automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel. Basically stating that wheel spin is just about gone. I don't make a lot of torque in my application, but even with the Phantom Grip with BFgoodrich DOT Drag Radials, I would spin the tires a lot just stomping on the gas. After I installed the Quaife, stomping on the gas and the car just moves out. Very little wheel spin.

Making turns and accelerating out of them feels a lot smoother. With the Phantom Grip, I felt no difference than not having one at all. When I installed the Quaife, night and day difference. It goes back to automatic torque bias. Being able to power through turns at a considerably faster speed is a whole new feeling.

I personally see it as I've had a Phantom Grip and was not very pleased with it. Wasted money and ended up having to spend more to get a better product. It comes down to the sweet taste of savings are soon forgotten by the bitter taste of having to spend more in the end.

Then again, just my personal opinion.
