215/45/17 vs 225/45/17 tires

so the stock rims come with 215/45/17 tires, and I'm looking into an aftermarket pair of rims with snow tires that have a 225/45/17 profile, but the reseller is a dunce and can't help me on this. 225 is the width in millimeters, and the question is, will I be able to fit my stock 215s on rims designed for 225 (cause I want my street tires on the gold rims), and more importantly, will the 225/45/17s fit my stock rims (the snow tires on my stock rims).

Here's a pic of it photoshopped with the rims I'm lookin at.

Thoughts?

also, as an afterthought, anyone know a good place to lookup info like this? maybe a graph with the sizes? i saw some stuff on tirerack.com, but i'm wondering if there is something a little easier to understand that I can look at to understand this whole tire/rim sizing issue. Thanks!

I know you can on 18" cause I went with the 225 as opposed to the 215.. check with Web, he knows everything, literally

People stretch tires on wider rims all the time. Here is a link....

Yeah, they'll fit just fine. I've run 225 tires on 15x6.5 wheels before, and it's no problem at all..

In fact, the cantilevered look of the tire looks pretty mean, almost like a race car. At least, that's what the Hoosiers looked like when they were on the race car.

You might want to consider running 225/40/17 though to keep the rolling diameter similar to stock. That way, your gearing will still be correct.. if you get too much off, your speedo will no longer be accurate.

on a 17x7 rim? that's dangerous! 225 would be the max to stretch on a a 7" wide rims before you loose your sidewall integrity

You can't compare the difference in aspect ratios b/c they are in relation to the overall width of the tread.

A 45 aspect ratio of a 215 is almost exact to a 40 aspect ratio of a 225. The thing you have to remember is that keeping the same aspect ratio on wider tire will give you a taller side wall thus, more rotational resistance. YOU WILL LOSE POWER TRANSFER!

Also, be careful what you read online. People saying they have seen this on this, or they've done this with this....it's the math and safety that matters...not what CAN be done.

A 7 inche wide rim will fit as small at 195mm tire UP TO 225mm tire SAFELY. Anything thinner or wider is going to bubble out or shift on the rim on turns, hard acceleration or hard braking. Just research the numbers rather than what people have seen or may have done.

Agreed. I've seen even 235 series tires on a 7 inch wheel, but these were Hoosiers with VERY hard sidewalls on purpose built race wheels.

But you do have to carefully weigh anecdotal examples. I agree. What worked for someone else might not work for you because they luckily had the right combination of parts to make it work, or they knew what the issues would be and took care of them beforehand.

okay.. thanks.. so my rims will be 18x7.5 and i was thinking about getting 225/40/18.. is that safe? how about 215/45/18. they will both be safe with my rims right?
