The Gearhead

You will need:

2 VHT night shade spray
2 Duplicolor Acylic Enamel Clear (Black label)
5 2000 grit sandpaper
1 1000 grit sandpaper (only for runs, sags or blemishes)
1 Mineral spirits
1 Painters tape or masking tape

If you don't have an extra set of tails here is a guide for removal of the taillights
I would not recommend doing on the car because of the wetsanding and overspray that you may get on your car.

1. First take the mineral spirsts and clean the tail lens.

2. Tape off the part of the tails that are visible from when the hatch is open

3. Tape off the reverse light if you don't want them tinted

4. The key to the VHT is light coats from about 12 inches away from the lights. I made 3 passes (vertical, horizonal, diagonal) per coat

5. Allow 5-10 mins between coats, I applied 4 coats. Depending on how dark you want will determine how many coats you will use.

6. Once you have achieved you desired tint its time for the clear. Spray the clear in the same fashion as the VHT. Allow 15-20 mins to dry

7. Once the clear has dried, its time for a wetsand. I had a bucket of water and a soaked rag that I squeezed water over the light. I then soaked the 2000 grit paper in the water and sanded in a crosshatching pattern. Let the paper do the water, if the paper drags add more water. Once you have wetsand the light, dry and buff off the residue. The light will look like crap and this point but don't despair. If you feel necessary repeat steps 6,7.

8. Now considering that you are happy with the surface (no high spots of clear, debris in the clear, or uneveness) you can go for you final coat of clear. This will be a heavy coat. Spray slowly covering each area becomes cloudy *Don't over do it though, at this point the clear will tend to run.* Let dry for about an hour

9. If you didn't have any runs or blemishes (orange peel) then your ready for the next step, if you do have blemish wetsand and repeat step 8

10. The last step is a hand buff with a microfiber towel and a coat of you favorite wax. This is not required, but will help seal and protect the finish. I have read that it is best NOT to wax until 7 days after the last coat of clear is applied, so that it is fully cured.

Any questions?

www.summitracing.com sells vht for 12.95 per can. Can also be ordered through amazon, but its still coming from summit. The biggest difficulty I found searching is that i was spelling it wrong. The actual cans are called vht nite shades.

Excellent DIY I plan on doing mine this weekend. One question though because I'm afraid of messing it up; what was your method for taping off your reverse lights so well? I want mine exposed too.

I took tracing paper traced the outline and cut then used some double sided tape on the back to keep it on.

This may be obvious, but don't forget to take them off before you start to clear. Even though you are not tinting the reverse lights they will be cleared for an even glossy finish.

Thanks for this awesome write up! i did my tails tonight and i just finished wetsanding and im waiting for the large clear coat to dry. I had never taken the back bumper off before so that was a pain in the ass, and i dont look forward to putting it back on.

I did real light coats, and i was going for the same look as yours and did about 6 coats, used up exactly a can on both the lights. I will post pics once i get done and put the lights back in tommorow. Thanks again Flint.
