![]() Duel Release: 1971 Available on DVD. Director: Stephen Spielberg... I watched this movie as a child one lazy afternoon. This movie might not appeal with some people, especially those who don't remember what life was like whenever venturing far from home, without a cellphone. Imagine being in a place where there is no one to hear you and no means to contact someone outside of a large bonfire, and the nearest city is 200 miles away in the middle of a harsh desert. That can be pretty scary. Now imagine some brutish Republican redneck trucker was trying to road-rage your MoveOn.Org/PETA stickered Scion TC into scrap metal and guts, along said desolate highway, with no way to dial 911. Scary indeed, at least if you're a Democrat. I've partied in the California Desert (Burning Man/Fullmoon Gatherings anyone?) and if not for a cellphone, we would have been lost on several occasions. It's a great place, surreal and wondeful, yet dangerous. There is gold and crazy meth-heads up in those hills. Regardless, watching this movie as a child in the 80's I still wondered: 1. How bad do you have to suck at driving to not be able to avoid or outwit a slower, less agile vehicle? 2. Why didn't the guy confront or talk to the road-rager? I was a child then and only understood the playground maxim: If you get pushed, you push back.... 3. Why didnt the guy just stay at the truck stop diner, where there was other people? 4. Why didn't he just abandon the car and walk offroad where the truck could not follow? 5. Why am I watching some slovenly "40-year-old virgin" pansy run away from a psycho truck driver high on PCP and plaid?!??!?! The answer to these questions and life's other mysteries, are miraculously revealed by the end of the movie. Spielberg entertains and at the very least it's not Howard the Duck. So kick back, and enjoy it Mystery Science Theater 3000 style. And be thankful for today's cellphones, cameraphones, and camcorders to catch road-ragers with, and 911. Nice review. I've seen this before, but I can't remember anything about it (besides what you posted above). I'll see to picking the movie up and watching it again so I can throw down my own review. Do your part: Donate to Club Scion tC! |

Been awhile since I've seen this, but remember it being a bit unnerving since it could happen. Isn't Dennis Hopper the main character? ![]() Check Engine Light Eliminators |
