Forum Courtesy

^ read this link and you should understand what's expected in forum behavior.

lately I've witnessed a lot of verbal attacks on users

it's not appropriate to call another user and idiot, stupid or use any profanity to verbally attack any person.

posts of this manner are not acceptable, if you are being harassed in a thread, you can report the violating post with the newly added report post link.

no forum is perfect, but everyone here is aiming for a positive and friendly user experience...

remember, it should be about the cars

you also PM SqMK if you're having trouble with one particular harassing user or have a site related question

I know where the idiot thing has come from.....

I allmost wanna test the waters on this. Its allmost like saying you cant use the right word for the situation. I mean how does calling someone a "flowerhead" when they need to be called a "....head" get the point across??

Ive been on forums that the flaming of other users is rampant. People know how to police themselves. And theres just some things that people need a good forum smack upside the head. The "I wrecked my car street racing dont flame me" thread comes to mind.

This is probibally one of the most populated car boards i frequent and 99% of the time has little to no flaming of other members. Im sorry if im not seeing eye to eye with the mods that "Flaming and cussing is becoming rampant"

BTW calling someone an idiot for wrecking their car street racing. In my book is warrented. Now if i was to say "you stupid Fn idiot" then im overstepping my bounds and verbally attacking someone.

If theres an issue with this post feel free to PM me and tell me where im wrong or if ive pushed the wrong buttons.

Not really sure why you should have to swear to get your point across. It shows lack of intelligence when you chosse a swear word over another word that can take it's place.

It's just going to help clean up a bit of chatter on the site and actually bring it more on track with what the site is about...The Scion tC. Yes, some situations just bring out the worst in us but, if you can choose your words wisely, you'll get your point across in a more intelectual way. If the other person decides they don't know how else to say anything but curse at you, then you have already won. It's a battle of wits so take the higher ground.

im not sure i agree with this lack of intelligence thing. certainly there is a difference in swearing towards somebody and simply swearing to get a point across.

eh, i had a whole post written out trying to prove my point but my posts have been too long lately, ill cut to the chase. we are, for the most part, adults. in the real world, swearing is a part of life. i am not saying people need to do it or it is the greatest thing in the world, but you can hardly go outside without hearing it. people even use it towards strangers on the street (which is horribly rude). to say someone cannot use the "sh$#" as it is used in colloquial language seems an awful lot like censorship. we might as well get rid of the 'u' and the 'r' and my personal favorite: u're, meant to be 'your'.

clearly there is a difference when it is being used to attack someone on the forums, and that should not be allowed. but if i want to say "damn your ride is lookin hot" (seeing as how that is how i speak) am i supposed to say "i do believe good sir, that your auto is looking particularly well in that photograph. had you taken it to the automotive cleansing facilities prior to the taking of the photograph?" -- a crude example but you get the point.

basically, swearing isnt the issue here, it is the verbal attacks on people that may or may not include swear words.

and the usual disclaimer: IMHO.

I know the uproar about "idiot" came from me saying that to tcpope about his situation that he did. I know he got seriously offended as did several members that i voiced myself in that manner.

Thats where my point was coming in. Where is the line in the sand. Is the line that no verbal bashing, no matter how well deserved (crashing your car street racing, and proclaiming yourself to be a great driver with 4 months behind the wheel...or asking if you should feel bad because you stole a Honda antenna "whoever that was, take your stock tC antenna, and just whip your own ass for something that dumb") or is there the justified, someone needs to say it in the simplest way possible kind of words that are accepted, although they are degrading.

Sorry to be a pain on this subject, but i really want to know the bounds of this.

THE SHADOW

Supafly and Imagin:

Both points taken and all opinions are valid so thanks for the feedback.

My previous post about swearing being a sign of intelligence is mainly from my involvement in the business world. Yes, EVERYONE swears.......just a reality these days. But, you also have to look at it in this manner: When you are in a board room and you are having a company wide meeting, you will almost NEVER hear someone say "F*ck" or "A**" or others of that nature. They are able to come across in a more articulate manner to get their point out to the company.

That's what I meant by the intelligence factor. If you feel that the only thing you can do is swear, than I'd suggest rethinking your thoughts and attempt to relay them to the community in a more articulate way. Hell, open a dictionary or thesarus and find new words to use! No one ever said it was a bad thing to be smart right?

I understand that feelings drive comments most of the time when personal opinions are thrown out there. I would just suggest a little bit of reevaluation on your comments prior to posting if they seem to entail cursing/swearing.

I really wish all of this wasn't going on. I joined this community and have dedicated myself to this one because of the people on here. (I love you all!) I didn't like how on SL people always criticized each other for the decisions they made just on mods. I was looking for a forum that was supportive and nice, which I still think this forum is. I really don't think there is a need for swearing or any type of attacks on any of the users on here. We're all people and should give everyone, despite the circumstances, the same respect. We should all go by the rule, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. And at the same time don't post things you know you're going to get bashed for. Hopefully this all can be resolved and we can go back to being the BEST tC forum on the internet!

this post was very well put. i also understand that you can say other things, but sometimes people deserve to be called an idiot. another forum i'm on is one of the biggest in the south. based in atlanta, but many other users from other surrounding states are on it. importatlanta.com/forums. we have a call out section.if there was a rule for cursing and swearing on that site, EVERYONE would be banned. and the second site i am on only has a rule where you cant curse or swear in your THREAD TITLE. that way, when visitors and guests come, it doesnt look bad on the home page because it is titled " i'm a f'in idiot because i wrecked my car while street racing!!!!"

I think I was misunderstood or I came across as "name-calling" would be considered swearing. That's not what I meant

Swearing to me would be actual curse words ...we all know what those are so I won't list. Calling someone an idiot when deemed necessary is just a fact. If they do something that OBVIOUSLY has the consequence that they received and then they get upset over it, then yes.........they are a completely and total idiot.

Sorry for the confusion.

hmmm. calling someone an idiot is pretty subjective. you can make all the argument in the world as to why it is the case but the word itself is pretty subjective. to me, calling someone any name is more rude and offensive than saying "i have to wash my car to get all the bird $#*@ off"

i think im just trying to differentiate between attacks and swearing. to me, calling someone an idiot is an attack. if they wrecked their car racing i am sure they already know what they did. and that it was most likely, "idiotic". constructive criticism is one thing, but sometimes we are just belittling people.

For people like that, I would suggest NOT posting their wreck story on here then. It's the nature of the beast for someone to say something that will get under their skin.

Excessive swearing is what I am concerned with. Naming calling when it isn't warranted is another thing. In the case of the "moron" / "idiot" claims in the street racing car wreck thread, I believe that is appropriate for how drastic the consequences were, and warranted the use of such words to describe intelligence.

As discussed earlier, there will be an option to filter swearing. Users will have the ability to turn the swearing filter on or off, where as anonymous users will always have the swearing filter on. This is so that things CAN be work safe, and looks good + clean when presented in search engines.

There is no denying that tcpope was an idiot in respect to the street racing, and to think that everyone on the forum would have sympathy for him for doing so. He blew up and started the swearing / name calling that WASN'T warranted, so he was more in the wrong than everyone else. I called him a moron and an idiot numerous times and I justified my reasons doing so.

If the name calling is truthful, warranted, and doesn't consist of a string of swearing, by all means, I don't have a problem with it. But it MUST be warranted, and shouldn't be used just to hurt the user.

I hate to play devil's advocate here (well actually, i very much enjoy it), but I curse a lot and it doesn't make me any less intelligent. I am an investment advisor for one of the largest investment banking firms in the world, and I have a masters degree in business management and international marketing. I do not curse at work because it is my career, but when I am not at work i swear like a sailor. That's just who i am. This whole thing is getting a bit ridiculous! People need to stop being so freakin sensitive about things that don't actually effect them. I like the idea of having a filter that you can elect to turn on or off, so if that sort of thing offends you then you don't have to be exposed to it. We're starting to sound like a bunch of pansy-ass little PC soccer moms. Remeber what your mom told you as a child: "sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt you." I don't agree with bashing and flaming people who are just trying to ask a question or show their ride off, but some people do deserve a little negative feedback once in a while. The whole flaming thing that happened to redrumtc was staring to get out of line. Granted not everyone is the most articulate, and he did come off a little combative, but for christ's sake, don't keep throwing gas on the fire! As for tcpope, i feel bad for him, i really do. i did a lot of stupid things myself when i was younger, but what happened was just that: stupid! I'll tell you what, if it makes everyone feel a little better, whenever you want to be insulting, just insert my name in place of the person the comment is directed to. don't hold back, i won't take it personal. i love the community that we have here, and i don't mind taking one for the team.

That's what I am talking about. In a career (professional environment) and position that you need to show your intelligence through articulating your words to form a full conversation, you will not swear. To me, this DOES show intelligence b/c if you weren't smart about it, you'd start spouting off like all of us do on our "down times" and get fired almost on the spot.

This forum is supposed to work around knowledge and personal opinion on the topic at hand. I personally feel that if someone can't make one comment without shooting off some sort of swear/curse word, it just shows their lack of vocabulary or just pure laziness.

I do agree about the thickness of everyone's skin though. EVERYTHING said should NOT be taken as a personal hit. Example: If someone says something about your car that you don't like, don't instantly jump back on them about their car and make it a personal battle. Just take it with a grain of salt and realize that these people are ON THE INTERNET AND CAN'T HURT YOU!!!

Moderate swearing that isn't used for trolling is fine as the future system will allow users to filter them if unwanted. I don't see why you would need to use the F bomb or something like that though.
