THE SHADOW

I have the Beltronics RX-65 and wanted to mount it up and out of the way to get the best RADAR detection (not laser b/c laser is best mounted low) and to keep it very clean.

Here's how I did it:

Tools
-plyers/crimpers
-10mm socket
-3/8 ratchet (or just a small one b/c there's no room)

Steps:
1: Open hardwire package you ordered (this was mine)

In the picture, RED, is an inline glass fuse, GREEN is the detector power connection, BLUE is where you will tap into a power wire, and YELLOW is the ground.
The blue object is the T-tap the kit comes with.

2: Remove the dome light by pushing the ceiling panel up a bit to fit your fingers where the BLUE circle is. Pull down pretty hard and work your way towards the two RED circles. There are a total of 3 pressure clips on the back.

3: Locate the moonroof motor plug

4: For ease of installation, unplug the dome light plug (YELLOW...the RED is the moonroof motor)

5: Look inside the hole in the ceiling panel and to the left (driver's side). That's a 10 mm bolt you will use for a ground.

6: Locate the ORANGE wire on the moonroof motor plug. That is the wire you will use the T-tap on.

7: Remove the 10 mm bolt for the ground, position the ground and then re-tighten it down FIRMLY

8: Slide the spade connector into the T-tap for power

9: I tied the wire up and tucked it up to the left in the hole

10: From the inside of the hole, push down on the ceiling panel a bit up front to allow a gap to feed the wire connector through

11: Position and mount your detector

Enjoy

THE SHADOW

I had a ground issue the first attempt and got everything back up and cleaned up and when I started the car, it didn't work! I took it all apart again and found that the ground was loose in the crimp connection. I just replaced it and it worked. The T-tap is a bit loose but I taped it in place and have no issues with it now . I might feel froggy in a few days and take it all down and solder everything to make sure it's all solid.....but.....not sure. If this works, there's no point in changing it. The ground is the only concern incase it's grounding out the power while it's off. I'll keep an eye on the voltage but it should be fine

THE SHADOW

No, that's just a direct wire kit. It doesn't do any jamming or anything else. Basically, rather than having a big cord hanging, it's all tucked away and just direct power-drawn from a constant-on power supply (sunroof motor when ignition is on )

Yes...yes they are.

I was thinking of it but it's pointless. They were laser jammers. Honestly, if I get pulled over while getting tagged by laser, it's my fault anyways so whatever. I'll bite the bullet.......but I rarely speed and mainly just cruise.

The detector is just for speed traps that I know are set up just for an annoyance and "end of the month" quota catches. Just an early warning, not a speeding helper.

^That's the XRS9430 that I'm selling . I had that one. Great detector. I got mine directly from Beltronics where I ordered my detector. I don't think they have a kit for the Cobra detectors but if you look in the other thread about when I first wanted the hardwire kit, someone posted a DIY about how to make your own hardwire setup. I'll get the link:

agent009_5 had it.

THE SHADOW

Just a quick update on how the detector is doing mounted up there:

Great! I just came around a corner today that was marked at 30 in the community and then opens to 45 for the backroad. Very tricky location and a CLASSIC cop-stop around my area. There is a constant K meter there but today, right when I picked up that meter it went from 1 bar all the way to max alert instantly. I look up the hill into the sun glare and see a figure standing outside infront of a white Crownie. Yeah, definately aiming right at me with K band radar.

So, mounting it up that high is not compromising my radar detection. Laser may be no longer completely accurate, but I don't really care much about that. Maybe later, if I decide I "need" it, I'll get the M20 blinder laser jamming kit.

I just did this, and it was a very easy install. Took me about 15 minutes. I was unable to get one of those t-taps. I went to auto-zone, pep boys, and an independent electrical store, and none of them had it. I ended up cutting the end off of the male receptacle and tapping both wires side by side. The only other thing worth mentioning, is that when you take out the dome light, pull it straight down and with gentle force. Otherwise you could leave the pressure clip in the headliner and pull one of them out of the dome light... But don't worry, the plastic is very tough and it all went back together just fine. Great write up!

Scroll down to splice connectors and that's what they look like. I got one at autozone. I was the red one that I used.
