How do you know if your clutch is burned, or if other things related to that are messed up. I bought my Tc a few months ago, and it was my first manual car. I knew sorta how to drive stick when I bought it, but just enough to get around, and I live in San Francisco with a lot of hills. I drive excellent know. Sometimes the shifter sounds like its grinding when i put it into 1st from neutral. Is it just me or should i go to the dealership to get somehting fixed?

ummm are you fully putting it in gear? i know it grinds sometimes if you don't push it all the way in gear.

when u switch gears at high rpms and the clutch dont catch right away.. than ur clutch is gone...also the clutch might not be engaging for some reason (ie pressure plate).. could be a tranny problem but i dont see how on a new car.

The grinding could also happen if you are not fully disengaging the clutch when you put it in to first. This could happen two ways.

1) Your foot isn't depressing the pedal all the way
2) You lift your foot up even before the gear is in place.

If your tC is only a few months old I really dont think your clutch as all that worn out at all.

Yea, the tC has a notchy sounding gearbox. But occasionally it makes that sweet "thunk" sound when the tranny wants to shift smooth

a mechanic that worked at my past dealership had some very non scientific advice for checking to see if your clutch is gone...

his words:

"put it into 5th gear from a dead stop, give it some gas like you're going to take off in 5th gear... if your clutch still grips, you'll stall out.... if your clutch is slipping bad, you'll hear it and you will not stall.."

clutch slip is one of the first signs

back when i was driving my car, when i learned, i prolly created tons of glazed spots on my clutch cuz i remember that sometimes when i was climbing rpms, my car made a slight jerk, but rpms still stayed constant so i know it didnt slip, just prolly hit that glaze spot

really the ONLY symptom of a burned out clutch is slipping. Ie. it doesn't grab the flywheel. aka. engine rpms go up, but wheel speed doesn't increase.

you could have other problems with your clutch system (throw out bearing, clutch fork, slave cylinder) which could affect its operation. but the clutch disc itself only has one function, to grab the fly...and it its not, its slipping.

the mechanics trick is to put it in 5th (or too high of a gear for the wheel speed) while rolling and try to acclerate. eg. shift into 5th doing 10-15 mph and give it gas. if the clutch holds and the car accelerates (albeit ever so slowly) then its not slipping.

putting the car in 5th at a standstill then letting the clutch out just slips the hell out of the clutch. Not recommended if you're trying to diagnose and prevent clutch wear.. .

That's what I do with cars that may be having clutch problems. Put it in a higher gear while still rolling and floor it. If it accellerates ever so slowly but still does.........you're ok. If the rpms fly up and you don't increase speed, then you have a slipping clutch.

I know when i get something new I notice EVERYTHING that may seem like something is wrong... just give it a month it'll probably be ok, especially if its brand new...

also, the car will do that if you are going to fast to be in first. idk why but it does. same sound as if your rolling and try to put it into reverse. the only other thing that i can think of is not full depressing the clutch or trying to put it into gear after you drop the clutch. you would be an absolute horrible driver if you have a bad clutch after a few months. it takes a shit load to do destroy a clutch in a few months

Have you changed the fluid yet? Mine did the same thing as well. I started using Redline MT-90 as well as a ton of others use and it works wonders. Some say on a new car you should change the gear oil at 10K miles however, i waited until 30K like recommended. I just changed it again a couple weeks ago because my gear box was getting rough. I couldn't go from 2nd to 4th without hitting 3rd. It would start to gring as if i was trying to hit reverse from a roll. The INSTANT i changed the oil i went out and tried 2nd to 4th it shifted like butter, no more grinding. Maybe you should try it. Its only about 9 bucks a bottle and you'll need just under 3 bottles
