Did another 17 trail miles yesterday at Roserieville Park near Upper Marlboro, MD. Fun times!

Wrecked hard 2 times but I'm good other than a nice bruise on my inner right thigh from the cross bar.

First wreck was about 30 yard into the trail...haha. Didn't realize the trail was almost all sand so coming around a curve, I locked the rear too much and ended up splitting a 2 inch sapling in have with my shoulder. Luckily I twist the handle bars quickly not to bend my rim so the center tube hit and just bounced off. I laughed my a** off b/c it was soooooooooooo early in the run.

Second wreck was about the 16 mile mark (exhaustion in my quads kicked in about that point so maneuvering was a bit more difficult). Another sharp 90+ degree left hand turn with a cliff on the other side and a 2-3 foot thick Oak tree right at the apex of the curve. Again, locked the rear too much with no lean and went straight for it at about 15+ mph downhill. Nosebond the tree (had tires at 50 psi so they absorbed the blow), I jumped off the bike, landed and kept running for about 15-20 yards...haha. I get back to my bike and not a scracth (relatively speaking). From there on, it was smooth sailing...

Got to the end and about 50 yards (last hill) from the end, BOTH my legs go stiff as a board and I have to fall off my bike to get off. I use my body weight to bend at the knees b/c the lactic acid had full control of my quads. I stretched them out for about 5 minutes drinking 20 oz. of water/gatorade mixed, hoping that would flush some lactic acid off my muscles...eventually, it did, but i had to slowly walk my bike up the hill and then I rode it out to the car.

All in all............another GREAT trail ride

I have a SPECIALIZED mountain bike. Funny story, my friend who rides nothing but BMX and I were partners for the 8th grade science project. We were too lazy to think of anything scientific so we were like "hey, you have a bmx bike I have a mountain bike, lets see which one stops in less distance. It was obvious the answer was the mountain bike but we made an argument with our teacher that was the BMX bike is lighter. K so we get started, I'm used to riding bikes so I knew just slamming the BMX's brakes was not a prob. THen my friend rode my mountain bike and I didn't tell him to slam the rear brakes first. And this was our braking test from the highest speed (25 mph, I measured it because I have those onboard mini comps measuring speed and distance traveled and all that jive). Long story short he came around the block going pretty damn fast, and the second he slammed on the brakes I saw the rear lift up and he beings to say "OH SHI---" and then tumbled head over heels before he could finish the sentence. Overall: him and the bike were fine.

And web how the hell do you drive back? I know when my tennis conditioning comes around I'ma take the van out instead of the tC. One time i made the mistake of taking the tC after a 3 hour session of conditioning (nothing but running except for a 15 minute session of non stop push ups). I was driving so rough and releasing the clutch too early. I almost stalled a couple times because I was so close to cramping up.

I stretched for about 20 minutes and pumped 2 16oz. bottles of water/gatorade mix into my system to flush that lactic acid. Believe me, there was no driving right away. I couldn't straighten my leg 75% before it shot straight like a board. I pulled my seat real close to keep my legs bent on the ride home and shifted by pressing the clutch in using my ankle to flex more than extending my leg. My calf was tired after 20 miles of driving.

This thread makes me really miss trail riding. I moved a couple years back and there aren't any trails around that are not on private property. The only thing i can ride on is flat walking trails. So i decided to get a cheap walmart bike because they are the best for getting in shape because they are so heavy and they also have crappy grease in the bearings and stuff that makes more resistance. But anyway, i have been riding the flat trails for 20 miles a trip and i go about 4-5 times a week.

But after reading this it kinda makes me REALLY wanna start looking harder for trails. It sounds weird but i miss the fights i've had with trees and rocks. They're not cuts and bruises, they're character marks, right? lol

I need a suggestion for a good sand/loose gravel/dirt tire. The tires I have now are great for mud but suck on the trails now b/c it's soooooooo dry and it's all loose gravel and sandy.

I am searching on http://www.performancebike.com so send me a link if you find a good tire.

Ones I have looked at:

Forte FasTrac Folding MTB Tire

Continental Traffic MTB Tire

Hutchinson Python Classic MTB Tire

Another quick question:

I just got a 100 oz/3 liter capacity camelpack and need to know that after you use it, is there a way to clean/dry it? Last time I just rinsed it out of the water that was left and left it open to air dry. I just don't want to have bacteria grow in there and me ingest it next time.

Most camelbacks that I know of are bacteria resistance...I know my northface one is...but you should definitely check. The bag and everything was made by Nalgene.

Ok, my bike is slowly getting up in the ranks . I upgraded the rear tire for better traction to a Continental ContiSport (soft sidewall for some flex but amazing traction in loose terrain and mud), Hutchinson Python New Gen front tire (less rolling resistance and a lot of flex for easier maneuverability in rocky conditions), Oury lock-in grips for the handle bars, under-seat repair pack, egg beater pedals, Nike (not sure which model) silve and black shoes with locking ankle strap....

So far, the bike is amazing and has taken a beating. My gf is buying me a new front de-railer for xmas and after xmas, I'm upgrading my brakes to hydraulic kits from Hayes or Avid (probobly Avid Juicy kit or Hayes 9) and upgrading my gear selectors on the handle bars and rear derailer. So much to come so I'll keep you all updated!

Update:

Front tire is now what I had on the rear (Continental Contact...2.10x26) and my rear tire is now an Ignitor tire (2.35x26).

Just went for a very SHORT ride b/c when I got out there, the trail was all snow/ice. It was cold (23 degrees) but with the windchill, I was riding in 7 degree weather. My camelpack froze in the tube so I couldn't drink any water and about 2 miles into it I started to lose my breath. I thought I could push through it but when my core temp felt like it was dropping (2 heat gear layers, 1 fleece layer and 1 windbreaker on my chest) I turned around. I almost blacked out but concentrated on my breathing and keeping my legs pumping. I got back to my car and warmed up for about 10 minutes. After throwing my bike in the back, I just drove home slow realizing I just escaped the early stages of hypothermia!

Well, I broke my bike yesterday.......and damn near my left arm ....BUT IT WAS AWESOME!

I took a new trail and hit a 3 foot depression right behind a tree root and rode the front tire about 5 feet. I was flying down this hills at about 15-20 mph just cruising and had to hard break due to an almost 90 degree turn in the trail. Well, at that turn I had to slow to maybe about 10 mph in the span of 3 yards and just couldn't hold it. I flipped over my bike, and it came with me b/c I'm clipped in, and in mid air I unsnapped and threw it off of me. Unfortuneately it hit a tree along with my left arm.

I ended up snaping the front fork, bending the rear trailing arm and rear dereailer. Needless to say, my arm looks like I was mauled by a bear and beaten with a bat. It was the best ride yet, although it broke my bike.

Anyways, it's at the bike doctor now getting a new fork (Pilot...not sure what model but my buddy had it brand new just sitting in the box and gave it to me.....80mm travel), full tune and adjustment for the gears AND Avid Juicy 160mm hydraulic brakes!!!

Yes, I'm white....it's due to the winter time and having to wear long sleeves at my job...blah blah...haha

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn, that seems like it was a good spill. Ya gotta remember, always keep it rubber side down, haha.

What kind of fork did you go with, and what kind of brakes?

Avid Juicy 5, 160mm hydraulics
The fork is a Pilot fork (not 100% sure) with an 80mm travel full air adjustable shock. It was a new one my buddy had but since he moved south, he had to get rid of it so I got a 400$ shock for free.

My buddy has Hayes but the bike shop near me recommended Avid...all the guys there have the same setup and love it. I rolled in after my wreck and they just looked at me and said "What the hell did you do!?"...hahahaha

It really looked like I was mauled by a bear and beaten with a bat. My bike was limping in as well.
