Well, I had to clean the filter anyways (37K+ on my K&N) and also had to install the Dr. Isotope panel soooooo......I got creative as well .

I just used 2-3 nice coats of flat black primer and my heat gun to cure it quick .

Let me know what you think.....yeah, my header paint chipped a bit .....oh well.

looks stealth web. what, no more heat wrap though?

eh, paint chips, what are you gonna do?....

as far as the intake though, unless you plan on driving your car through the chesapeake, i'd take that water protector shield of the filter head.

where its sitting, theres no way you could suck water in. and you'll probably get much better air flow characteristics imo.

Thanks,

Acutally, the filter wrap kept the filter pretty damn clean. It was still nice and red but I just wanted to clean it for good measure. The wrap doesn't inhibit airflow though. It's designed as a fully permeable membrane for air but just beads water off. I only keep it on to keep the filter cleaner longer, and since I have that bumper cut out off all the time (other than in the winter), it just keeps water spray away from the filter. I've noticed the base and some of the bottom side of the filter actually gets a LOT of water spray just from driving in the rain. This hasn't reduced the intake suction though.

if it keeps water out, it inhibits air flow.

But it's about as much as putting a screen in front of your door. The difference isn't felt and can only be measured. So, let's say it sucks in 1000 cfm (just a number out of the air) withOUT the wrap, it'll probably suck in close to 990 cfm with it on.

Very minor difference in air flow (if any) and not noticeable when run with or without it. I've run without it for a few miles (couple hundred actually b/c when I first got it i didn't put it on)....then I put it on........no difference at all but the filter stayed cleaner.

soooooo, TECHNICALLY.....it might impead air flow a few cfms but not enough to do anything noticeable to your engine.

Where the intake goes into the fender, it's a holder and gap filler. It holds the intake in place and closes the unsightly gap in the fender. I'm trying to find his website....hold on

it would actually be like using two screen doors, since the filter element is essentially a screen, restricting air flow. the water shield on top of that is just unneccessary imo, thats what i'm saying. because you have no risk of intaking water.

my intake pipe is right behind the false grill (or whats left of it) and i've driven in rain storms and puddles and haven't had any issue. again, i have the stock intake box, but still. the filter head would have to be sitting in water or have a bucket of water dumped on it to suck water all the way up the pipe. its just natural atmospheric vaccuum pressure, no boost. the suction isn't strong enough to suck up water like that.

If you're accellerating while driving through a deep enough puddle, you will have plenty of vacuum to suck water up. Seen it happen in too many CRXs with CAIs.

But also, since hydrolock doesn't just happen when you suck up a gallon of water....I'll keep it on for the security that moisture won't collect on the filter itself and accumulate into enough water droplets entering the intake to damage the MAF sensor or causes excess corrosion in the TB and combustion chamber.

oh, i know of it happening to at least one b16 civic a guy i knew just put a CAI in, then it started to rain. 30 mins later, he calls, "wtf happened to my motor?!!!"

but the filter head sat much lower and more exposed to the outside.

web, with your filter head where it is, you are totally safe. unless you are one of those morons you see on tv who tries to drive thru the 3 foot flood water...but i don't think you are

have any tc's hydrolocked yet?

haha, i steer clear of the puddles..........it's just the trucks coming the opposite way that hit them into me that I worry about.

I think 1 did on SL.............it was a while ago though.........Haven't heard of any on here.

hey web, this bud's for you!

i just heat-coated/painted my heat shield, coolant lines, air box, and post-air box intake piping to the TB.

found a spray can of Rustoleum "High Heat" black heat coating spray. says it withstands temps up to 1200 degrees. its a flat black spray.

the heat shield looks pretty good imo, nice and stealthy. then the intake pipe and air box adds to that stealth look. i laid it on pretty thick, but nice and even, so it should do a pretty good job of sealing the heat out of the intake pipe, to prevent heat soak. And hopefully, the coolant lines will stay a bit cooler, eventhough they'll have hot coolant running thru them.

i think it looks good. maybe oversprayed the block a bit, but who cares? it ain't no show car. ;)

i let her run for a few minutes, and put my hand over the heat shield, didn't feel hot at all. big difference. wasn't hot until i actually touched it. and even then, no where near as hot as before. this should help to bring down engine bay and intake temps i think.

i'll get pics up when i get a new battery for my digi cam.

so my first road test was a success, i could definitely tell my intake temps remained cooler throughout my whole commute to work, as opposed to gradually heating up as engine bay temps rose and heat soak took affect.

i didn't pop the hood and spot check the heat shield, coolant lines, intake pipe/air box/TB, but i will on my way home today.

it also rained a bit on my way to work, so that could have been a variable as well.

but either way, this heat coat stuff i used seems to be real nice stuff. it should especially do a good job reducing heatsoak on the plastic snorkle piping from the air box to TB.
